Netflix's fantasy/horror series Locke and Key has been renewed for season 2. Based on the comic book series written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez, the series centers on a family that moves into their ancestral home following the death of their father. After settling into their new home, the kids stumble upon magical keys with otherwordly powers. However, they're not the only ones in search of the keys. A demon is also on the lookout for them and will do whatever it takes to get its hands on them.

Although the series received more middling reviews from critics, currently sitting at 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, it was quick to become a hit with viewers. More importantly, life-long fans of the Locke and Key comic book series were elated to finally see Hill and Rodriguez's work adapted for the screen. After a failed pilot at Fox in 2011, a planned trilogy at Universal, then a series at Hulu that fell through, the show finally found its home at Netflix. Compared to its previous iterations, the showrunners for Locke and Key explained how the current adaptation leans more into the kids' experience, which seemed fitting since the streaming platform has found monumental success with shows that took a similar route (mainly, Stranger Things). It's clear that Netflix felt confident in the show's future, as did the showrunners considering season 2 was already being written long before season 1 even premiered. Thankfully, it looks like Locke and Key now has the green light from the streaming platform to carry on.

The Locke and Key Twitter account shared the exciting news this morning. The caption reads, "more keys, more demons, more aloha. Locke & Key is officially returning for season two!!" with a short video attached that opens with a key marked "2". Check out the announcement below.

Along with the success of the Netflix series, both Hill and Rodriguez have also revealed that they've begun working on a new one-shot of the comic book series. Not only that, but they've also teased that another full volume will follow the one-shot. Each new story will branch off from the Netflix series' narrative, creating quite the expansive history for the Locke and Key universe. This will be a great way to bring fans of the series and life-long comic fans together as the show's story and audience continues to grow.

After a long and winding road to the screen, it's exciting to see Locke and Key finding so much well-deserved success. Considering the series takes a little bit from some of Netflix's other big success stories -- mainly Haunting of Hill House and Stranger Things, the former of which Locke and Key's showrunner Meredith Averill also worked on -- it makes sense as to why it was so quick to find an audience. Not only that, but the series has also garnered a very dedicated fan base that is eager to see what comes next. Although season 2 is a long way away from being released, it's thrilling to know that there'll be more Locke and Key mysteries to unlock in the future.
