The fantasy world of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is finally coming to audiences at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Plot details for the upcoming film are currently unknown, though it will mark the second theatrical adaptation of Wizards of the Coast's iconic role-playing game. Dungeons & Dragons was first brought to the big screen in 2000 with a film starring Jeremy Irons and Marlon Wayans, which was an infamous critical and commercial bomb upon its release.
Chris Pine is leading the ensemble cast of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves that also includes Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman and Hugh Grant. Game Night duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are at the helm for the fantasy adventure, having also co-written the film with Michael Gilio based on a story treatment from the latter and Nightwing's Chris McKay, who was previously in talks to direct. Filming on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves kicked off in early 2021 and after almost a year of post-production work, audiences have exciting news coming their way for the movie.
With nearly a year still remaining until the film's release, IGN has brought word that the first Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie footage will premiere at San Diego Comic-Con. The studio is also hosting the in-person con's first Hall H panel with filmmakers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein and unspecified cast members. There will also be a Dungeons & Dragons Tavern Experience giving attendees 20 minutes of unique photo opportunities, exclusive takeaways, including artwork from Boss Logic, and Dragon Brew prepared by Quincy's Tavern. Producer Jeremy Lachtman wrote about the SDCC panel in the following statement:
“I could not be more thrilled to kick off the return to Hall H with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves! I’m excited we get to share the film’s incredible and fun world in-person with the amazing fans who make San Diego Comic Con so special."
News of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie footage premiering at San Diego Comic-Con is rather promising for those eager to see the latest take on the tabletop game. With nearly a year of post-production under its belt, it seems likely audiences will get to see at least some of the large-scale set pieces teased by the cast and set photos from the set, including dragon fights and sailing on a boat modeled after a copper dragon. It will also be interesting to see what plot details the first Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves footage gives to viewers, especially after a faux synopsis leaked last year and was subsequently debunked by Paramount Pictures.
One of the most exciting takeaways from the first Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie footage premiering at San Diego Comic-Con is that the general public won't have to wait for long to put their eyes on the upcoming reboot. Studios typically release official versions of most of what they show at SDCC shortly after they make their premieres at the event, making it likely Paramount will release the footage by early August. It should also be noted that with the film not hitting theaters until March 3, 2023, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves coming to SDCC seems to point towards Paramount's confidence in the project.
