President Donald Trump recently responded to Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat: Subsequent MovieFilm by making a strange comment about their history. In the original 2006 Borat, directed by Larry Charles, British comedian Baron Cohen plays Borat Sagdiyev, a journalist from Kazakhstan who comes to the U.S. to pursue marrying his crush, Pamela Anderson. Along his journey, Borat takes on the antihero role as he explores American culture through politically incorrect comedy. In Borat: Subsequent MovieFilm, directed by Jason Woliner, Baron Cohen’s character returns to American in the hope of restoring his country’s reputation by making offers to prominent politicians.

In the mockumentary, Borat visits real-life people and politicians. Along the way, he decides his 15-year-old daughter, Tutar, played by Maria Bakalova, would make an excellent bride for none other than Vice President Mike Pence. Bakalova provides one of the most shocking moments of the movie in an interview with Rudy Giuliani. With the sequel, Baron Cohen has made Trump one of his biggest targets. Although Trump doesn’t make a formal appearance in Borat 2, his son, Donald Trump Jr., almost did as seen by deleted clips that are now online.

Per Voice of America White House bureau chief Steve Herman, Trump was asked about Borat 2 and security breaches while aboard Air Force One. He responded, “I don’t know what happened. But years ago, you know, he [Baron Cohen] tried to scam me and I was the only one who said no way.” Trump went on to say, “That’s a phony guy and I don’t find him funny. To me, he's a creep.” After Trump's comments made their way online, Baron Cohen offered a reaction of his own, calling Trump a "racist buffoon" and saying he doesn't find him amusing either:


It’s likely Trump was referencing a segment from Baron Cohen’s Da Ali G Show in 2003, where Baron Cohen pitched Trump a business idea of an ice cream glove intended to prevent ice cream from dripping on the user’s hand. Though Trump's response implies he wasn't duped by Baron Cohen, DiscussingFilm shared an image of the two from the segment:


Based on Trump's comments, he's not a fan of Borat 2 or Baron Cohen. However, judging from Baron Cohen's reaction, the feeling is mutual. It’s pretty clear the comedian isn’t a supporter of the President and is employing his platform to poke fun at the current administration. Although Baron Cohen’s use of the mockumentary style to deceive real-life politicians is controversial, Borat has again captivated audiences’ attention globally.

Since Baron Cohen and Trump do not get along, by timing the movie’s release just two weeks before the U.S. Presidential election, Baron Cohen’s intentions are clear. Due to its questionable comedic tone, it is uncertain whether this sequel will sway voters’ perspectives, especially in such a polarized election. However, Borat: Subsequent MovieFilm has no doubt already affected the political news scene.
