Disney's Mulan will be cheaper on Disney+ internationally than in the U.S. The Disney live-action remake was intended to premiere in theaters in March, but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The film was pushed to July 24, then again to August 21, before being removed from Disney's release schedule entirely. Disney then took a controversial approach by announcing that Mulan would be released on Disney+ on September 4 for $29.99.

The announcement of Mulan going straight to streaming immediately received backlash on social media and from theater owners, who have been hit especially hard by the pandemic and found the decision to be a betrayal by Disney. Fans have also heavily criticized the hefty price, with many saying the $30 is not worth watching the movie from home and that it's really only a deal for families. Disney CEO Bob Chapek defended the decision, explaining that the additional purchase for Mulan will not be just a one-time rental fee, but that Disney+ subscribers will own the movie as long as they remain subscribers. Additionally, Disney still intends to eventually release the movie theatrically in certain areas where Disney+ is not available, including China.

Now Disney+ international pricing details for Mulan reveal cheaper costs than in the U.S. Mulan will be available to U.K. subscribers for £19.99, $34.99 CAD in Canada and €21.99 in most other European territories, including Spain and Italy. Additionally, the movie is priced in New Zealand at NZ$39.99 and in Australia for AUS$34.99. Overall, the various international prices roughly amount to $26, making them cheaper than in the U.S.

Until Disney's decision to move straight to steaming, the highly anticipated remake was initially meant to be the first major movie to premiere amid the reopening of theaters, along with Tenet. Mulan is among quite a few 2020 movies that have skipped theaters amid the health crisis. Trolls World Tour and The King of Staten Island were made available for $19.99 without having to subscribe to a streaming service.

This is likely good news for international Disney+ subscribers. The $29.99 price in the U.S. sparked such a huge debate that it is unclear how well Mulan will perform upon its release. While Chapek insisted that Mulan is a one-off situation, it does leave Disney fans to wonder whether the studio will decide to follow this game plan for future movies if Mulan ends up being a hit. It will be interesting to see whether the prices between the markets will impact how well the movie does.
