According to filmmaker Kevin Smith, Mallrats 2 is going to bring back the entire original cast of the first Mallrats movie. Despite mixed reviews when it was first released, the 1995 comedy has become a cult classic over the years. It has even been referenced in more mainstream films recently, including a scene in Captain Marvel.
Smith has been developing a sequel to Mallrats for several years, but it hasn’t been until recently that the project could get off the ground. This year, Smith finally revealed that he had completed a script for the new film and was beginning pre-production. The movie was even given the tentative title Twilight of the Mallrats, apparently referencing how the original characters from Mallrats will be navigating their “twilight years” in the upcoming sequel.
In an interview with ComicBook, Smith explained that it wouldn’t just be a few characters from Mallrats making an appearance in the sequel, but all of the important characters. Smith said he was incredibly proud of finding a way to include T.S. Quint, one of the main characters from the original film played by actor Jeremy London. “T.S. has a really like, poignant part too. I'm very happy with T.S.'s part two,” Smith said in his interview. The filmmaker also claimed he had even found a way to include the late Stan Lee in Mallrats 2. Stan Lee had a significant cameo in the first film, and Smith says he’s confident that the Stan Lee scene in the new movie makes perfect sense and will tug at viewers' heartstrings. “When you see it, it'll fucking break your heart and make you cry and while you're laughing. It is so like, I'm not saying I'm clever, but it's f*cking clever,” Smith asserts.

Before this interview, Smith had already confirmed that at least Ben Affleck would be making an appearance in Twilight of the Mallrats, reprising his role as Shannon Hamilton. Now, it appears other Mallrats characters will be reprising their roles as well. The movie has also added some new members to its cast, including Aparna Brielle as the daughter of Mallrats character Brodie Bruce.
While the story of Twilight of the Mallrats will have to focus a bit on these new characters, it’s clear that the sequel is meant to be a nostalgia bomb for long-time fans. Given this, it makes sense that Smith and the rest of the film’s crew would want to include as many of the original Mallrats characters as possible. Hopefully, Twilight of the Mallrats will do something new and exciting with all these characters while still being that healthy dose of nostalgia fans are craving.
