Sons of Anarchy creator, Kurt Sutter, will direct his first feature film, This Beast, for Blumhouse. Sutter has been one of the bigger names in modern TV drama for years, having done substantial work on The Shield prior to his creation of hit motorcycle club drama, Sons of Anarchy, and the spinoff series, Mayans M.C., which is about to begin its third season. Now, Sutter will make his theatrical directorial debut with a new horror film coming to Netflix.

Blumhouse has built a name for itself over the years as one of the most prolific producers of modern horror movies. Paranormal Activity, The Purge, Insidious, Get Out, and Sinister are just some of the studio’s successful entries in the genre. Blumhouse has also produced acclaimed dramas like BlacKkKlansman and Whiplash.

Blumhouse’s newest film, This Beast, will be written, directed and produced by Kurt Sutter in his theatrical film directorial debut. Chris McCumber and Jeremy Gold will executive produce. Per a press release from Blumhouse, the film will tell the story of an “18th century English village” being tormented by “a mysterious and elusive beast.” The story is based on real-life story of the Beast of Gévaudan – an unidentified creature that terrorized a French village in the mid-1700s. This Beast is set to release on Netflix at an unspecified date. No casting news has been announced as of yet.

It sounds like This Beast will come packed with all the horror and gruesomeness fans of the studio have come to expect. Per the official release, “Dozens of innocents are slaughtered and the mayhem is driven to puritanical heights by religious fanaticism. The impossible task of killing the beast falls to a lowly trapper who promises he can stop the carnage. But for him this hunt is not a professional mission, it’s a deeply personal one.” Given Sutter’s own proven track record telling gritty stories about morally complicated characters, it sounds like This Beast could certainly be an interesting watch.

The news of Sutter’s work on This Beast comes just days before Mayans M.C. season 3 will begin its run on FX. The Sons of Anarchy spinoff hasn’t been quite the smash-hit that its predecessor was, but it’s still generally been praised by both fans and critics, with season 2 having received notably more favorable reviews than the first. Between Mayans M.C. and This Beast coming to Netflix in the future, fans of Sutter’s work have a lot to look forward to.
