Spaceballs’ Lone Starr Gets Solo: A Star Wars Story Style Fan Trailer
Spaceballs‘ Lone Starr finally gets his own standalone film in a fan-made trailer spoofing Solo: A Star Wars Story. The real Solo finally dropped its first trailer earlier this month after making fans wait forever. Highlights of the first trailer included our best glimpse yet of Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian. We also got our first big looks at Emilia Clarke’s Q’ira and Woody Harrelson’s Beckett.
A long time ago in a Hollywood far, far away, when Star Wars was just a humble trilogy and not a multi-movie juggernaut, legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks spoofed George Lucas’ universe with his comedy Spaceballs. A then-unknown Bill Pullman played Lone Starr, a send-up of Han Solo, who flew around the galaxy in a space Winnebago with his faithful half-dog companion, Barf (John Candy). Over the years, Spaceballs has developed a reputation as a classic spoof. With Star Wars once again coming to dominate the pop culture landscape, many clamor for Brooks and company to return for Spaceballs 2. Indeed, Brooks and MGM have reportedly discussed making Spaceballs 2 actually happen.
In the meantime, fans can enjoy a fan-made trailer from Darth Blender that gives Lone Starr his own standalone film in the style of Solo: A Star Wars Story. It’s another little masterpiece of mash-up humor from the channel that mashed up Ant-Man and the Wasp with Antz and Bee Movie. You can watch the trailer for Lone Starr: A Spaceballs Story above.
For his mash-up, Darth Blender lifts the audio from the Solo trailer and lays footage from Spaceballs on top. The approach may be simple but it’s hilariously effective. The super-intense music and dialog from Solo playing over the cheap-quality visual effects and flatly-lit silliness of Spaceballs by itself is humorous. What’s even funnier is imagining young Bill Pullman actually playing Han Solo in the new movie. Pullman’s performance as Lone Starr arguably captures the essence of Harrison Ford’s Solo, albeit with a comedic twist. Many worry that real Solo actor Alden Ehrenreich will miss the mark in his own attempt to channel Ford. Of course, it’s impossible to tell what Ehrenreich has done from one trailer.
The first Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer mostly seemed to sell the movie as an intense, action-packed origin story. However, indications are the movie actually goes for more humor than previous Star Wars films. In fact, writer Lawrence Kasdan recently revealed a list of Solo‘s influences which include The Big Lebowski. The movie’s tone no doubt will be discussed heavily after it comes out. But no matter how funny Solo turns out to be, it’s unlikely that it will be funnier than Spaceballs.
