As the release of the Fast X trailer draws closer, a new legacy trailer for 2001's The Fast and the Furious reminds audiences of Dominic Toretto's origins. Directed by Rob Cohen, the first Fast & Furious movie sees Vin Diesel's Dom, a street racer, take Paul Walker's Brian O'Conner under his wing. Neither Dom nor his sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster), realize, however, that Walker's character is actually an undercover cop investigating a series of dangerous crimes. The first film would go on to spawn a massive franchise, which has only grown in scale and scope (and budget) with each subsequent installment. Dom and the rest of the crew is next set to return in Fast X.
With the Fast X trailer now just over a week away, The Fast Saga YouTube channel has released a legacy trailer for The Fast and the Furious.
The trailer features a number of highlights from the film, including the beginning of Brian's love story with Mia, the film's first major street race, and Dom's romance with Letty. The retrospective trailer also features plenty of interactions between Brian and Dom, which largely served as the heart of the franchise until Walker's tragic death in 2013.
Fast X Should Go Back To Fast & Furious' Roots
As the movies in the Fast & Furious franchise became more financially successful, they also became increasingly outlandish. The franchise now has little in common with the humble street racing-based stories of the original Fast & Furious movies, with Dom, Mia, Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Tej (Ludacris), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), and the rest of the crew thwarting terrorist plots and pulling off car-related stunts that pay little attention to the laws of physics. While the bonkers action sequences in the later installments are certainly fun in their own way, Fast X, as the penultimate entry, would do well to go back to the roots of the original movies.
As the franchise prepares to bring Dom's story to an end, Fast X could benefit from honing in on Diesel's character and the people around him, telling a more intimate story than the end-of-the-world stakes of the previous few films. In addition to Dom's core crew and more recent additions like Charlize Theron's Cypher, Nathalie Emmanuel's Ramsey, and Helen Mirren's Queenie, Fast X has added a host of other actors to its cast, including Brie Larson, Alan Ritchson, Jason Momoa, Rita Morena, Daniela Melchior, and Michael Rooker. Despite the undoubtedly impressive talent of the actors involved, Fast X already faces a challenge just in terms of satisfyingly serving all of these characters.
While the cast alone speaks to Fast X's massive scale, Gibson affirmed earlier last year that the movie will, in fact, go back to the series' roots. It's unclear what this means for the movie's story, but that could mean that it involves more street racing or, at the very least, more grounded action with more personal stakes. Many questions remain about Fast X and the planned 11th (and final) installment, but the most recent legacy trailer for The Fast and the Furious serves as a reminder of just how far the franchise has come in the last two decades.
