The Russo Brothers are developing a series reimagining Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, and it just got a major casting update. The classic story has been fodder for Hollywood for quite some time, most popularly in the 1969 film, which starred Paul Newman and Robert Redford as the titular real-life Old West outlaws. That project was a huge hit and won four Oscars, including Best Original Song for the Burt Bacharach theme "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," and inspired several other filmmakers to stake their claim on the story with projects including a 1979 prequel called Butch and Sundance: The Early Days that starred Carrie's William Katt and Sniper's Tom Berenger.

The Russo Brothers are no strangers to stepping into massive established properties. The directing duo, who cut their teeth on comedy series including Arrested Development and Community, became household names off the back of their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier and continuing all the way through to the box office smash hit Avengers: Endgame in 2019. They also recently scored another hit with their Netflix spy thriller The Gray Man, which reunited them with Captain America star Chris Evans.

Per THR, The Russo Brothers are developing a currently untitled series based on Butch and Sundance for Prime Video. The project, which has been picked up straight to series, will be written by Kaz and Ryan Firpo, the duo behind the MCU Phase 4 film Eternals. Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell will be playing the Sundance Kid opposite Bridgerton alum Regé-Jean Page as Butch Cassidy in what is reported to be an alternate version of the American West.

The Russo Brothers have already worked with Page, who played the sinister CIA boss Carmichael in The Gray Man after his breakout role as the steamy Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings in Bridgerton. However, this will be the first time that Powell has teamed with the mega-producer duo. Although Top Gun 2 is undoubtedly his biggest credit to date, the performer has cut his teeth on other high-profile projects including holding a lead role opposite Jamie Lee Curtis in the Ryan Murphy horror-comedy series Scream Queens and playing astronaut John Glenn in the Oscar-nominated NASA drama Hidden Figures.

There is still a lot more to learn about this new version of Butch and Sundance. Considering the fact that it is described as an alternate America, it may feature a more modern-day setting than Western fans are used to. However, whatever it turns out to be, the show now has two charismatic rising stars who will most likely deliver something interesting regardless of the concept.
