Star Trek: Discovery's upcoming fifth season will be its last. Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, Discovery premiered in 2017 and has since run for four seasons following the exploits of Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who rose from being a disgraced Starfleet Commander to becoming the Captain of the USS Discovery. The ensemble cast of the series, which is originated as a prequel but is now set in the 32nd century, also includes Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, Blu del Barrio, David Ajala, and Tig Notaro. Since it began, Discovery has also won several awards, including 2 Emmys from a total of 10 nominations.

Per Deadline, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is now set to be the end of the series. The season will premiere on Paramount+ in early 2024. Because of the gap between this announcement and the season's premiere, Paramount+ is set to celebrate the legacy of the series throughout the next year at various events.

Modern Star Trek Wouldn't Exist Without Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery is not only the longest-running Star Trek series on Paramount+, it's the fundamental building block of the expansive TV franchise. The series, which premiered long enough ago that the streaming service was still known as CBS All Access, was a portent of things to come in many ways. Of course, this includes the direct spin-off Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, following Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike.

However, even the shows that aren't spin-offs owe Star Trek: Discovery their existence. Along with the spinoff series The Good Fight, Star Trek: Discovery kept the nascent CBS All-Access streaming service afloat, allowing them to rebrand and grow into Paramount+ and create an entire cottage industry of Star Trek series, both live-action and animated. This roster now includes The Next Generation sequel series Star Trek: Picard and the animated shows Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy.

Star Trek: Discovery was also a beacon for Star Trek series to push representation and diversity even further in their casting while still holding true to the beloved characters of the past. Across the board, iconic characters from throughout the ages have either made appearances via actors reprising their roles or fresh performers breathing new life into the characters. These appearances include Ethan Peck playing Spock on Strange New Worlds, Kate Mulgrew returning as Kathryn Janeway in Prodigy, and the bulk of the TNG crew reprising their roles in the ongoing Picard season 3.
