A new TV spot for Marvel Studios’ latest Disney+ series, Ms. Marvel, reveals a surprising connection to Spider-Man: No Way Home. Following Moon Knight and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU’s next big project sees Iman Vellani make her acting debut as Kamala Khan. Ahead of her big-screen debut in 2023’s The Marvels, Ms. Marvel introduces audiences to its titular character, a Pakistani-American teenager from Jersey City. In addition to Vellani, the series stars Aramis Knight, Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Mohan Kapur, Azhar Usman, Matt Lintz, Yasmeen Fletcher, Zenobia Shroff, Laith Nakli, Travina Springer, and Nimra Bucha.
Ms. Marvel begins with its hero as a humble writer of fan fiction, gamer, and superhero obsessive, with a particular appreciation for Captain Marvel. Irrespective of her interests, Kamala has trouble fitting in both at home and school. That is, until she acquires a pair of cosmically powered bracelets, which give her superpowers of her own. Trailers and clips from Bisha K. Ali’s series have teased Ms. Marvel as an endearing coming-of-age tale akin to Jon Watt’s Homecoming trilogy. However, previous trailers have indicated that the new hero may get off to a rocky start and need help with damage control.
Marvel Entertainment has shared a new Ms. Marvel trailer, revealing the return of the United States Department of Damage Control. At the 30-second mark, the video shows DDC Special Agent P. Clearly (Adrian Moayed) is looking into Kamala Khan not long after detaining Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in No Way Home. Check it out below:
Initially a subsidiary of SHIELD, the DODC is a federal executive department that specializes in dealing with cleaning up in the aftermath of enhanced conflicts, such as in Iron Man and The Avengers. The DODC is seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming’s opening scene when the department terminates Adrian Toomes’ private contract following the Battle of New York. In No Way Home, Agent Clearly and the DODC arrest Peter after Mysterio reveals his secret identity and implicates him as a murderer. Until Ms. Marvel, the DODC’s agents had only physically appeared in the Homecoming trilogy.
Some have taken issue with Ms. Marvel changing its main character’s powers. However, the above trailer and clips that have preceded it (not to mention glowing early reactions) seem to bode well for the likability of its lead hero and overall tone. Its inclusion of the DODC is just another example of the MCU’s interconnectivity and, perhaps, implies Ms. Marvel's status as essential canon viewing. After making her panel debut in 2013, Kamala Khan quickly became one of Marvel Comics' most popular characters, and it seems that Marvel Studios is setting Vellani up for a very bright future when Ms. Marvel drops episode 1 on June 8th.
