James Gunn Has Perfect Response To Space Force Guardians Name
Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn jokes on Twitter about suing VP Mike Pence after announcing that members of the U.S. Space Force will be referred to as Guardians. Gunn's creative take on Guardians of the Galaxy marked an innovative turn for the MCU as it prepared for the increasingly ambitious movies to come. The movie's success surprised many, especially considering the original comics weren't particularly popular. But the scrappy group of defenders got a sequel, were featured in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, and have a third movie on the way.
That said, Gunn was cut by the studio for a stint after old tweets resurfaced that contained jokes about severe topics such as pedophilia and molestation. After getting fired, Gunn moved to the DCEU for Suicide Squad, but he has since apologized and has been rehired by Disney for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The entire scenario was further complicated by the fact that Gunn's tweets were resurfaced by a right-wing conspiracy theorist.
It seems like that won't stop Gunn from speaking his opinion on matters, though, as he has been active on Twitter since the news broke that the U.S. government's new military wing, Space Force, will use the term Guardian for its members. His first comment was a retweet of the news asking if he could sue. He then responded to various comments, including one where he jokes with Mantis actress Pom Klementieff about using her character's powers on the administration. Another user had a rebuttal citing that the use of the term by the military dates back to 1983, to which Gunn replies that the Guardians of the Galaxy stories have been around since 1969. And lastly, Gunn interacts with someone with an anecdote about naming the members Guardians as an intentional reference to the franchise.
The Trump administration first announced that they'd create another branch of the military for outer space back in 2018. Since then, the expansion has been highly criticized by both political pundits and comedians. The Office's Steve Carell and Greg Daniels even went so far as to create a satiric comedy series based off of the development. On top of that, Space Force caught the attention of Star Trek fans early this year with the release of its new seal. Back in January, the administration premiered the logo for the new branch, and people were quick to compare the Space Force logo with Star Trek's Starfleet insignia.
Given this new connection to his own movies, it is unsurprising that Gunn would weigh in on the matter. He has spoken out against the Trump administration before, indicating his political views. He also seems very willing to voice his opinion, especially when prompted, as he did with the Warner Bros deal to release Suicide Squad and other movies on HBO Max.
Unfortunately, it might be a while until fans can see the MCU's Guardians on the big screen in a movie featuring mainly them. Avengers: Endgame left off with the group flying with Thor, and at least Star-Lord will reappear in Thor: Love and Thunder, but possibly others will, too. On top of that, Disney+ also announced that a holiday special from the Guardians will come in 2022 to the streamer. So at least fans have something to hold out for while Gunn and the rest of the crew film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
