James Gunn has no patience for trolls who want to tell him Batman is better than the Guardians of the Galaxy. A good number of people have straddled the line between Marvel and DC in recent years, but Gunn stands as one of the most intriguing examples. He's best known for directing the Guardians of the Galaxy movies for the MCU, but before returning for the third, he hopped over to the DCEU to helm The Suicide Squad. The blood-soaked effort received glowing reviews from fans and critics back in August, and Gunn intends to stick around in that universe for a bit longer with the upcoming HBO Max spin-off Peacemaker.
Currently, Gunn is hard at work directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This will likely be his final Marvel movie, and it could be the last one for several of its characters as well. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently scheduled for release in May 2023 and will see the returns of most of its original cast, including stars Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but early reactions from the cast have hinted at an emotional adventure.
Beyond directing colorful movies with killer soundtracks, Gunn is known for responding to all kinds of comments on social media. While he'll often share thoughtful insights into his movies, he also isn't one to ignore the more ridiculous posts that come his way. On Sunday, Gunn fired back at someone who, for seemingly no reason, told him Batman is a better character than the Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn offered the best response possible: "I come to Twitter for keen insights like this, thank you." Everyone should handle trolls this way.
Considering how, before this, Gunn was simply commenting on Drax's popularity while making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, one has to wonder why someone felt the need to chime in with a pointless comparison. Batman stands as one of the most iconic superheroes of all time, and no one will dispute how great a character he is. At the same time, the Guardians bring something different to the comic book world, and that doesn't make them lesser characters.
Batman is about to have a big 2022 thanks to movies like The Batman and The Flash, but the Guardians won't be spending the year idle either. Ahead of Vol. 3, the entire team will appear in the Disney+ event The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. With so many superhero projects coming out in the next few years, it's safe to say there is room for both Batman and the Guardians of the Galaxy - even if some fans feel the need to draw a line between the two. Let's just agree to let people like what they like, okay?
