Boots Riley is finally back in the director's chair with the first I'm A Virgo trailer. Having gotten his start as a rapper and activist with the Oakland-based group The Coup, Riley eventually broke into filmmaking with 2018's Sorry to Bother You, the surreal dark comedy centered on a Black telemarketer on a rapid rise in his company after adopting a white voice, only to begin alienating himself from his activist friends and learning of the company's dark dealings. Scoring widespread acclaim and a solid box office haul, Sorry to Bother You quickly put Riley on the map in the film and TV world.

Ahead of the show's South by Southwest premiere, Prime Video has released the first I'm A Virgo teaser trailer.

The video, as seen above, offers the first look at the bizarre new comedy show from Sorry to Bother You director Boots Riley. The I'm A Virgo trailer introduces audiences to Cootie, a 13-foot-tall Black man who begins enjoying everything life has to offer.

Everything We Know About I'm A Virgo

Riley first announced I'm A Virgo to be in the works in mid 2020, indicating it would be a seven-part series, which was picked up by Amazon Studios just a few months later. It's unclear how many episodes Riley wrote of the show, which features similar elements to Sorry to Bother You of being set in the creator's stomping grounds of Oakland, California, albeit with a magical realist twist. I'm A Virgo revolves around Cootie, the 13-foot-tall young man kept tucked away by his parents finally venturing out into the world and learning of its highs and lows.

Jharrel Jerome, the Emmy-winning breakout star of Netflix's When They See Us miniseries, leads the star-studded cast of Riley's I'm A Virgo. Joining him in the show are Brett Gray, Tony nominee Kara Young, Cruel Summer's Allius Barnes, Olivia Washington, and iconic comedian Mike Epps and True Detective's Carmen Ejogo as Cootie's parents. Two interesting names also featured in the I'm A Virgo cast is also that of The Righteous Gemstones and Justified actor Walton Goggins as The Hero, a real-life superhero operating in Oakland who Cootie idolizes, and Robert Longstreet, who starred in Riley's breakout film.

The I'm A Virgo trailer looks to be retaining a number of Riley's unique sensibilities from Sorry to Bother You, including a very diverse cast and depiction of Oakland that feels both authentic and otherworldly. With the trailer set to the tune of "Gangsta" by Tune-Yards, the co-composers for the 2018 film alongside The Coup, it will be interesting to see if Riley has reunited with the similarly Oakland-based group for more new music on the series. Audiences in attendance of this year's SXSW will be able to find out when I'm A Virgo makes its world premiere on March 11.
