Marvel concept artist Andy Park promises Black Widow will be worth the wait, even despite the additional delay. Ever since Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff joined the MCU in 2010's Iron Man 2, fans have been clamoring for a solo film centered on the former Russian assassin. Discussions regarding the movie go back as far as 2012, but it was only in recent years that Black Widow finally gained traction after hiring Cate Shortland to direct. Black Widow was officially given a release date last summer and would've arrived in theaters this very weekend had the coronavirus pandemic not delayed it. Now, the film will kick off Marvel's Phase 4 in November, which has quickly become the busiest month of 2020 for movies.
As a prequel set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow will see Natasha go back to her Russian roots in order to dismantle the Red Room program that changed her. She'll face plenty of opposition in the form of brainwashed Red Room agents, as well as the organization's mysterious leader Taskmaster. Luckily, she won't be facing them alone; Natasha will be joined by her former family, made up of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour), and Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz).
Park, Marvel's Director of Visual Development, shared a post on Instagram showing off some of the finer details found in Black Widow's first poster. While acknowledging that the film was supposed to be premiering this week, Park assured fans "It'll be worth the wait." He also offered a callback to Natasha's most recent MCU appearance, Avengers: Endgame, by saying, "We gotta continue banding together apart before we can get back to “normal.” Whatever it takes..." The extra-long wait for Black Widow is a bitter pill for fans to swallow, largely because they've already had to wait so long for it to even get made. There was a hope among some that the film would be released early to Disney+, similar to other films like Onward and Artemis Fowl. However, it was highly unlikely that Disney would ever take that route because of financial reasons. Black Widow is committed to a proper theatrical run, which means fans have to be patient for several more months.
Still, that extra wait could just make its eventual release all the more sweeter. Pugh has described Black Widow as a "very beautiful" film, and fans are certainly excited to finally, properly delve into Natasha's past. While a Disney+ release could have allowed Black Widow to arrive on schedule, it'll be even better to see it in theaters. Hopefully, Park will be right in saying it's worth all this waiting.
