Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher 2 will hit theaters Oct. 21, 2016, Paramount and Skydance Productions announced Wednesday.

Ed Zwick is directing the sequel, which will open four years after the original film played at the box office, grossing $218 million worldwide. Zwick is set to start shooting in November.

Paramount and Skydance are high on Cruise following the success of this summer's Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation. The latest installment in the action spy franchise has grossed nearly $480 million worldwide, and has yet to open in China.

Paramount initially balked at making a sequel to Jack Reacher, but the movie, based on the book series by Lee Child, ended up turning a profit thanks to ancillary markets.

Separately, Paramount officially confirmed that the title of Richard Linklater's next film will be Everybody Wants Some. The movie's release date — April 15, 2016 — remains the same.
