HBO Max's upcoming Constantine reboot show is reportedly almost finished with the scripts. as the studio has been getting a bulk of them. While John Constantine was a major player in the Arrowverse over the last few years, played by Matt Ryan, the Hellblazer is being reimagined over on HBO Max. Filmmaker J.J. Abrams and his production company Bad Robot are in the process of developing a Justice League Dark franchise, consisting of interconnected TV shows and movies. After having been stuck in development hell as a feature film, Justice League Dark is being retooled as an ensemble series and the start of a new universe, likely outside the DCEU.

One of the Justice League Dark shows that is in the works is Constantine, from Abrams and writer Guy Bolton. Unlike Ryan's Constantine, the reboot will follow a younger incarnation of the DC occult detective during his early years. The HBO Max drama will also reportedly feature a BIPOC actor as the new Constantine. While not confirmed (or denied) by either Warner Bros. or HBO Max, British-Nigerian actor Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù is rumored to be a candidate for the DC role.

With Constantine reportedly targeting a fall production in the UK, the show is supposedly arriving in 2023. In a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, the trade is hearing that WB has "the bulk of the scripts" for the Constantine reboot. While it's unclear how many episodes Constantine season 1 will have, Bolton and the writer's room have seemingly gotten most of their scripts done. The report also confirms the studio has the pilot script for another Justice League Dark series that Abrams is executive producing: Madame X featuring Nimue Inwudu a.k.a. Madame Xanadu.

Aside from Constantine and Madame X, Abrams' Bad Robot is also producing the Zatanna solo-film, with Emerald Fennell penning the screenplay. There was also a Deadman project rumored to be in the works for HBO Max in 2021, but that has not been confirmed by the studio. So far, shows and films for additional Justice League Dark members have yet to be announced, but should the franchise be moving forward, it's more than likely that other characters from the team will make the jump from panel to screen. While not connected to the Justice League Dark franchise, Jenna Coleman will be portraying a different member of the Constantine family as Johanna Constantine in Netflix's The Sandman.

While not confirmed, it wouldn't be shocking if Constantine season 1 consists of anywhere between 8-13 episodes, which is what a lot of HBO Max shows go with these days. Since Constantine seems to be the first show that will kick off the Justice League Dark universe, the reboot will set the tone for the new franchise. Whether it will tease or even include other characters that will be part of the team remains to be seen. With several scripts ready for Constantine, the reboot is one step closer to finally becoming a reality.
