While Mad Max: Fury Road successfully revitalized George Miller's iconic dystopian franchise, the Furiosa prequel can make its future even better. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and Tom Burke, Furiosa will tell the origin story of Imperator Furiosa, memorably played by Charlize Theron in the previous 2015 movie. However, while Max Rockatansky himself is not slated to appear, Furiosa can still successfully lay the groundwork for the next chapter in the saga.
Although concrete plot information remains sketchy – along with the identities of Hemsworth's and Burke's Furiosa characters – it's known that the film will focus on Furiosa's pre-Fury Road origins. Starting with her kidnapping at the fall of the world, the movie will chronicle the conflict between the Warlord Dementus and Immortan Joe (the memorable main antagonist from Fury Road). Delving into this backstory is clearly fascinating purely from Furiosa's point of view. However, in adding to her story, Furiosa can also add even greater depth to the whole Mad Max franchise, potentially even setting up its future.
Why The Furiosa Prequel Can Make A Sequel Even Better
Although Mad Max: Fury Road was received with critical acclaim, it did leave its titular protagonist in a slightly uncertain position. As evidenced by the fact it's taken nearly a decade for a follow-up (that doesn't even include Max himself), it's clear that Max's story and the entire franchise as a result didn't have an obvious direction in which to travel. Furiosa can change that.
In revealing more about the apocalyptic world of Fury Road, the Furiosa prequel can lay the groundwork for further stories that can be fully explored in an official Mad Max sequel. The film can also add to the roster of characters that helped make Fury Road such a resounding success. Considering that Charlize Theron herself has already expressed an interest in returning to the role of Furiosa (via Hollywood Reporter), Furiosa could also establish the premise for a second Furiosa/Rockatansky team-up. All this means that, even though Max isn't officially part of Furiosa, the events of the movie can still influence the character's future positively.
What A Furiosa Sequel Could Be About
Given the character's history in Mad Max: Fury Road, there are several potentially interesting avenues for a Furiosa sequel to explore. One idea could involve exploring the relationship between Immortan Joe's Citadel and the other tribes from the Gas Town and Bullet Farm. While they are only seen as part of the Fury Road pursuit, the existence of these communities is a tantalizing reminder of the world beyond the scope of Miller's 2015 movie.
A second potential Furiosa sequel idea could see the character continue her search for the Eden-like "Green Place". Although Furiosa's encounter with the Vuvalini confirms that her childhood home is long gone, it's possible that Furiosa could lead the newly-liberated people of the Citadel away from Immortan Joe's stronghold towards somewhere completely new. In both scenarios, there would also be the potential for the character to reconnect with Max, which would surely be a prerequisite for any Mad Max movie. It's also likely that a Furiosa and Mad Max: Fury Road sequel will use as-yet unseen events from the prequel movie to set up the larger future of the franchise.
