Netflix admits bizarre £36 price rise test for Brits
NETFLIX has confirmed that it's now testing higher prices for some customers in the UK.
It means that people signing up for Netflix may soon see prices higher than those everyone else.
The bizarre system was outed on Twitter, and then later confirmed by Netflix.
In a statement sent to The Sun, Netflix said: "We are testing slightly different prices to better understand how members value Netflix.
"Not everyone will see this test and we may never roll out these specific prices beyond this test.
"Our goal is to ensure that Netflix is always great value for money."
Netflix's premium package typically costs £9.99 in the UK, getting you access to 4K streaming and the use of four screens at once.
But today, users have been noticing that they're seeing higher price points for the package.
Customers posting to Twitter have reported seeing £10.99, £11.99 and £12.99-per-month pricing for the plans.
That's potentially an additional £3 a month, or up to £36 a year for subscribers.
Prices appear to have rose similarly for the £5.99 and £7.99 plans.
The Sun saw normal pricing on the desktop Netflix website, but prices for all plans had risen by £1 when viewed on the iPhone's Safari browser.
A Netflix spokesperson confirmed to The Sun that the price rises were part of a test.
The Sun also understands that customers will end up paying normal prices and that the higher prices are simply part of a test.
The Sun warned over a potential UK price rise for Netflix customers earlier this year.
Netflix raised prices over in the US by between 13% and 18% depending on your plan.
It was the biggest price rise for the company since it launched 12 years ago, but a Netflix spokesperson told The Sun that the price wouldn't affect UK customers at the time, anyway.
However, a top industry watcher warned that Brits would probably see the price hike eventually.
"Netflix consistently rolls out price hikes whenever they can, so its highly likely they will roll out another hike globally," Michael Pachter, of Wedbush Securities, told us.
"This deal is U.S. and some parts of Latin America, so a roll out elsewhere will follow in due time."
He added that the average revenue for Netflix in the USA is $11.15 (£8.69) for September last year, while the rest of the world pays $8.69 (£6.77) on average.
"They charge more in the UK than in India, but the international average is a lot stickier and price increases roll out slowly," Pachter explained.
He said this is because household incomes are typically smaller outside of the US "so purchasing power is lower, and it's harder to charge the same amount".
In 2017, Netflix boosted the cost of an annual UK subscription to £7.99 per month, increasing the total payment by £6 per year.
And the premium plan rose from £8.99 to £9.99 every month, tacking on an additional £12 to customers' bills.
Netflix offers three different plans in the UK.
The "Basic" plan costs £5.99, and includes: watching on one screen at a time, app support on multiple devices, unlimited films and TV programmes, the ability to cancel at any time, and the first month free.
If you move to "Standard" for £7.99, you get all of those perks, plus the ability to watch on two screens at once, and view HD content.
And for "Premium" and £9.99, you get all of those same perks, as well as simultaneous streaming on four devices, and support for 4K Ultra HD video.
There's also been talk of a fourth cheaper plan but nothing has been confirmed.
