Tim Miller’s Terminator 6 will hit theaters in summer of 2019. The Terminator franchise has obviously had its ups and downs over the years, with the last three installments – Jonathan Mostow’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, McG’s Terminator: Salvation, and Alan Taylor’s Terminator: Genisys – all failing to launch new trilogies. Paramount Pictures initially had two additional release dates set for Genisys‘ sequels, but the film’s critical and (domestic) commercial failure forced the studio to abandon those plans, which opened the door for franchise creator James Cameron to return.

Cameron boarded Terminator 6 earlier this year as executive producer, with Deadpool director Tim Miller helming the upcoming sequel. And as far as casting goes, Arnold Schwarzenegger confirmed his return as the iconic T-800 but with a twist: he will also be playing the human basis for the original terminator, thus allowing the sixth installment to provide some background information for the sci-fi character. To excite fans even more, original series start Linda Hamilton will be reprising her role as Sarah Connor after more than two decades away.

Terminator 6 will reportedly enter production in early 2018, and THR reports that the film is set to arrive in theaters on July 26, 2019. That particular release date is currently open, but that means the untitled sequel will be going up against Jon Favreau’s The Lion King CGI remake during its second week. If Favreau’s The Jungle Book is any indicator, The Lion King will certainly have quite the impact at the global box office. Of course, both films cater to different audiences and the summer blockbuster season is always jam-packed.


In addition to introducing audiences to the human basis for the T-800, Cameron has confirmed that Terminator 6 will completely ignore the last three franchise movies, thus making the new installment a direct sequel to the filmmaker’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which released in 1991. Moreover, that means the last three chapters will be labeled non-canon. Although it’s easy to ignore past sequels, it begs the question, where will Cameron take the franchise next?

Regardless of what Cameron and Miller decide, the legendary filmmaker plans on reinventing the franchise with Terminator 6 and potentially using the sequel to spawn a new trilogy. Given the franchise’s track-record with spawning/completing trilogies, hopefully, Cameron has better luck than past filmmakers have had with the time-traveling sci-fi epic. The only thing that would make all this news better is if original series co-creator Gale Anne Hurd also joined the fold, but she currently has her hands full shepherding The Walking Dead for AMC.
