Warner Bros. has revealed the synopsis for George Miller's Furiosa, which reveals how the story will fit in the Mad Max world. Miller is the creator of Mad Max, the franchise that Furiosa is a spinoff of, which follows a lone drifter in a post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland as he navigates his world, clashing with villainous gangs and helping to protect those just trying to survive. Mel Gibson originally played Mad Max for the first three films in Miller's series, Mad Max (1979), The Road Warrior (1981), and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985).

Miller returned to the franchise in 2015 with Mad Max: Fury Road, this time starring Tom Hardy as Max and introducing Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa, a driver for Citadel dictator Immortan Joe. Furiosa rebels against Immortan Joe, making an attempt to help his kidnapped brides escape his clutches, eventually with the help of Max Rockatansky. Fury Road has quickly become one of the most-lauded action films ever made, an endeavor many years in the making with a troubled production that eventually paid off when finally released, making $375 million worldwide and winning 6 Oscars. Shortly after, a prequel film was announced with Anya Taylor-Joy cast as a younger Furiosa in the character-titled film.

Now, Warner Bros. has released a synopsis for the film that gives a clearer understanding of how the movie will fit into the world of Mad Max. In Fury Road, it's revealed that Furiosa came from the Green Place of Many Mothers, but it's simply stated that she was "taken", eventually ending up as an Imperator for Immortan Joe. In Furiosa, it appears the character will be put in a war between two warring factions, Immortan Joe and the Warlord Dementus. Check out the new synopsis below:

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

The synopsis confirms that Immortan Joe will indeed play a big part in the film, which makes sense as Miller has extensive notes and background on all of these characters and how they fit into the larger Mad Max world. Hugh Keays-Byrne played Immortan Joe in Fury Road, but it's unclear who will play him in Furiosa. However, the casting of Tom Burke suggests he'll be playing Immortan Joe, as he's listed as a co-lead with Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth, who is likely playing the Warlord Dementus. Dementus aka Dr. Dementus has been mentioned in the Mad Max video game from Avalanche, which created its story out of Miller's notes. This could also mean that Scaborus Scrotus, the third son of Immortan Joe (and main antagonist of the video game) could appear in the film, perhaps played by the already cast Angus Sampson.

It's exciting to know that Miller is back in the world of Mad Max with Furiosa. The film is currently shooting in Australia and set pics have already started to emerge, showing off the wild and crazy wasteland designs that have come to define the series. Miller's Fury Road was an absolute game-changer for the franchise and although he's said Furiosa will be a different type of film, it's still a trip back to that world, which is more than enough to get excited about. Furiosa is set for release on May 24, 2024.
