Freya Mavor and Nikolai Kinski have also been added to the film, directed by Michael Hoffman.


Michael Stuhlbarg, Freya Mavor and Nikolai Kinski have joined the cast of Netflix's Gore Vidal biopic starring Kevin Spacey.

Michael Hoffman is directing the film from a screenplay co-written with Jay Parini, based on Parini's 2015 biography Empire of Self: A Life of Gore Vidal. The film focuses on the period in 1982 following Gore’s loss in the California Senate primary election. He retreats to his Italian home La Rondinaia in a Bacchanalian attempt to circumvent his writer’s block and sense of ennui. Douglas Booth and Griffin Dunne are also featured in the cast.

Stuhlbarg will play Gore’s longtime companion Howard; Dunne and Kinski as famed American composer Leonard Bernstein and renowned Russian dancer/choreographer Rudolph Nureyev, both of whom regularly visited Gore’s cliffside villa. Booth and Mavor will play a young couple also on vacation on the Amalfi Coast.

Andy Paterson is producing for Sympathetic Ink. Production is currently taking place in Italy. Gore is slated for release in 2018.

Stuhlbarg is part of the casts of two festival hits, Luca Guadagnino's Call Me by Your Name adaptation and Guillermo del Toro's fantasy film The Shape of Water. He is also featured in Steven Spielberg's ensemble drama The Post and Hulu's 9/11 drama series The Looming Tower. He is repped by ICM and Viking Entertainment.
