How Does Nick Fury Lose His Eye? Captain Marvel Theories Abound
We're just a couple of months away from Captain Marvel, the MCU's first prequel. In addition to witnessing the origin of Captain Marvel and where she's been all this time, fans will also learn how Nick Fury lost his eye. Like all its movies, Marvel is keeping fans in the dark on plot points, which has led them to create their own fan theories. While the popular theory is that a Skrull takes Fury's eye, one fan speculates that it was actually Captain Marvel.
In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Fury told Steve Rogers that the last time he trusted someone, he lost an eye. It's pretty easy to trust the wrong person when shapeshifting aliens are involved, but this new theory claims that Fury trusted Carol Danvers and she rewarded him by destroying his eye.
Taking to Reddit, the fan shared their theory that a misunderstanding will cause Captain Marvel to destroy Fury's eye. The theorist doesn't provide any elaboration on why Carol would do this, but it would essentially be a mistake. After realizing how badly she messed up, she'll flee the Earth after "getting a taste of Fury's power as head of S.H.I.E.L.D." and knowing that she "wouldn't be safe as long as Fury was alive."
The theory goes on the claim that this might explain Fury's reluctance to use the pager until The Decimation. He knew Carol would come because she "owed" him, but that he'd still want revenge, so he waited to use it until he knew he was going to die.
Alternatively, the theory speculates that the Fury we know might have been a Skrull and only Captain Marvel knew. When she attacked, S.H.I.E.L.D. thought she was attacking the real Fury, so she had to run from Earth.
Those are some different takes than what people have been pitching, but they seem pretty unlikely to happen. I like the originality, but I doubt that Marvel would make Fury a vengeful character or that Carol would "flee" Earth out of fear of anything. Whatever the reason Carol disappears, it will likely be more complicated.
Meanwhile, commenters in the Reddit thread offer their own takes on how Fury loses an eye. The most popular one, funnily enough, is Goose the cat. Goose has already been in a ton of marketing for the movie, and in the comics, Goose is actually an alien who looks like a cat. Never trust a cat, Fury!
In any case, we won't have the answers to these questions until Captain Marvel arrives in theaters on March 8, 2019.
