A Game of Thrones prequel about Aegon's Conquest is in early development at HBO. The premium cable channel struck gold with Game of Thrones, an adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Song and Ice and Fire series, and once again with the prequel House of the Dragon, based on the author's novel Fire & Blood. Now, HBO appears to be moving forward with another show for the fantasy franchise.

According to Variety, a Game of Thrones prequel about Aegon's Conquest is being actively discussed at HBO. The project is still in early development, so no writer is attached, though the search is currently underway. Sources also say there may be a feature film that sets up the series, though these plans are subject to change. HBO declined to comment officially on the matter.

Aegon's Conquest Is Perfect For The Next Game of Thrones Prequel

Joining the Jon Snow sequel series as one of many Game of Thrones spinoffs in development, the newly reported prequel would follow Aegon I Targaryen and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, as they conquer the kingdoms of Westeros on the backs of their dragons – Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes. The campaign known as Aegon's Conquest is the perfect subject for the next Game of Thrones prequel considering it has been mentioned many times in the original show and House of the Dragon. With the first prequel focusing on the fall of House Targaryen, the next logical step would be to chronicle the conquest that united the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule.

It's no surprise HBO is aggressively expanding the Game of Thrones franchise with a second prequel show and potentially the franchise's first tie-in film. Martin wants the Game of Thrones universe to expand into a vast, interconnected franchise à la the Marvel Cinematic Universe or Star Wars. Game of Thrones has attempted to expand before and failed with the abandoned Long Night pilot starring Naomi Watts that was scrapped on the same day House of the Dragon was greenlit. On the heels of the prequel show's massive success, HBO seems to have found the successful blueprint for the franchise's expansion.
