Dune Is The Only Movie David Lynch Isn’t Proud Of Making

When asked which of his projects he was most proud of, David Lynch says he's proud of all his work - except Dune, the 1984 film adaptation he directed. Lynch is an auteur filmmaker with distinct visuals and stories, evident in his cult hits Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive, and Blue Velvet. While Dune is a cult classic to some, Lynch's adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert has faced a lot of issues, both behind the scenes and with the film's reception.

In an interview with David Lynch Theater on YouTube, a fan questions Lynch about the project that he's most proud of making. Lynch has always been outspoken about his disappointment in Dune and how he didn't have much say in the final cut, calling the movie a failure. This time is no different, with Lynch resolutely saying that he's "proud of everything, except Dune."

Over 35 years after Dune's release, a reboot is on its way, directed by Denis Villeneuve. There was a miniseries adaptation released in 2000 which was relatively well-received, but it's not frequently talked about. Villeneuve has already proven he can successfully handle adapting material with cult classic status, evident with Blade Runner 2049. Lynch has made it clear that he has no interest in the upcoming film, due to his own difficult history with the material.

The Dune reboot stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and many others, and will not be drawing from Lynch's adaptation in any way. The official logo and first look images have been released, and the film will undergo some reshoots this August. Dune currently has a release date of December 18, 2020.
