Netflix is bringing the cult classic Dragon’s Dogma back in anime form, and it’s coming sooner than fans might expect. Dragon’s Dogma was first released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012, eventually getting an expansion called Dark Arisen and ports on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Dragon’s Dogma may have a devoted cult following, but it’s far from the most well known game that Netflix has adapted into an anime. Netflix started airing its Castlevania anime in 2017 and it quickly won fans over. Its third season came to Netflix earlier this year and a fourth season has already been confirmed by the streaming service. More recently, Netflix announced that it will be airing another anime based on a game, this time inspired by the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077. Titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the show will take place in the game’s Night City but follow a different set of characters. The Cyberpunk 2077 game is set to launch this year, but Cyberpunk: Edgerunners won’t be coming until 2022.

Fans won’t have to wait nearly as long for the Dragon’s Dogma anime. Netflix’s NX Twitter account shared the news that Dragon’s Dogma will be debuting on September 17th, 2020 and revealed a poster for the upcoming show. The company’s Facebook page also shared a few images from the show, revealing a few of its characters and a dragon that will presumably be the main antagonist. Netflix already has a landing page for the show on its website, containing just a few scant bits of information. For what it’s worth, Netflix lists the Dragon’s Dogma anime as “dark” and “exciting,” along with the following synopsis:

While Capcom hasn’t listened to Dragon’s Dogma fans’ increasingly desperate pleas for a sequel, its creator hasn’t given up hope yet. Director Hideaki Itsuno has said that he considered making Dragon’s Dogma 2 instead of Devil May Cry 5, and with Capcom saying last year that it wants to revive some of its dead IPs, he may still be able to give the game the second chance it deserves.

An TV show based on Dragon’s Dogma may not be exactly what diehard fans have been hoping for all this time, but it could be the proof Capcom needs that the series still has legs if the anime is successful. If Dragon’s Dogma turns out anything like the Castlevania adaptation, it will at least be another fun fantasy anime to binge between games.

Dragon's Dogma will debut on Netflix on September 17th, 2020.
