A recent update concerning Deadpool 3 ensures that the movie will avoid the most obvious (and potentially fatal) Disney error. Deadpool and Deadpool 2 were incredibly successful, in part thanks to their commitment to staying true to the comic book character's origins. In a piece of good news, the writers of Deadpool 3 confirmed it will be R-rated. Deadpool first debuted on the big screen in the often maligned X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Audiences were given a chance to be properly reintroduced to the Merc with a Mouth seven years later, and Deadpool's cinematic legacy was reborn. Ryan Reynolds played the role to perfection, and Deadpool's R-rated combination of foul language, lewd yet hilarious jokes, and spectacular violence led to great success at the box office and the announcement of a third installment.

The first two Deadpool movies were produced while the cinematic rights for the X-Men were still with Fox Studios. When Disney officially acquired Fox in 2019, the rights to the X-Men and thus, Deadpool, all reverted to Marvel Studios. It was subsequently promised that the X-Men and the Fantastic Four would soon be integrated into the MCU, opening up a whole new world of possibility for Marvel's shared universe. No matter how exciting the news was, concerns did arise regarding Deadpool's MCU future. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its family-oriented content, and all of what the studio has produced on the theatrical end thus far has been rated PG-13. Though Deadpool's foul mouth and obscene violence isn't his only trademark, it is a vital part of his personality, and erasing all of that in a PG-13 Deadpool 3 would be detrimental to the character.

Now, however, thanks to a recent Deadpool 3 update from writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, audiences can rest assured that Deadpool will remain Deadpool in the MCU. Despite the next sequel being slotted into the MCU, the writers have stated that Marvel Studios have been very supportive of Deadpool's successful formula. Considering Deadpool 3's script is being written by the same duo who also penned the first two movies, it's clear that the mercenary's future is in good hands. The update assuages fears that Deadpool 3 won't fall into what would have been an obvious and fatal mistake: changing the character and tone too much in order to fit the more family-friendly Disney brand.

Deadpool's success as a character doesn't necessarily rely on being allowed to swear or make vulgar jokes. Deadpool as a franchise is successful because the character pushes the boundaries of what is expected of the superhero formula. The fourth-wall breaks, cussing, and obscene violence all combine to make Deadpool the unique character he is as an antihero who lives outside of the rules of usual superherodom. Though these character traits could technically still be portrayed within a Disney PG-13 rating, it would likely be a watered-down version of the mercenary that audiences know and come across as a betrayal of everything that has made the character who he is. An R-rating might not be strictly necessary, but it will allow Deadpool 3 to continue to play with what has made the previous movies successful.

It is exciting to speculate how Deadpool will fit into the MCU's future, and especially exciting to think about which characters he may be able to pal around with. Knowing that Marvel Studios is supportive of allowing the third Deadpool movie to keep the essence of the first two is reassuring to hear. Deadpool's future may impact how the MCU approaches other more violent and adult-oriented properties, such as The Punisher or the upcoming Disney+ Daredevil show. Though little is known about Deadpool 3's overall plot, audiences can be certain of one thing: the Merc with a Mouth will be back, and just as obscene as ever.
