Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 maintains its targeted production and release date, James Gunn confirms. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has forced movies to be delayed and filming to be shut down, causing a domino effect on franchises like the MCU. That said, it has yet to affect the set schedule for the upcoming threequel featuring the universe's fan-favorite cosmic heroes.

Marvel Studios have made a couple of schedule adjustments to work around the global health crisis. That includes delaying Cate Shortland and Scarlet Johansson's Black Widow, which is supposed to kick off their Phase 4. Inevitably, it caused a domino effect on their full confirmed slate - all of them delayed in varying degrees. Gunn, however, confirms that fans can expect production to begin for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 when they initially scheduled it to start.

Asked on social media about rumors about the threequel being affected by Marvel Studios production rescheduling due to coronavirus, Gunn denied such claims. He added that regardless of what's happening in Hollywood now with regard to the pandemic, the filming and release dates for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 "have not changed at all over the past year & a half or so." Check out his full tweet below:

There was never any specified date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 production start, but Gunn has repeated multiple times that he will only begin working on it once the final cut of The Suicide Squad is locked in. The DC movie finished filming before the whole coronavirus pandemic broke out, which means that work on the film continues even with shelter-in-place mandates. Given the time-frame, it's possible that Gunn will fully finish work on the villain-centric blockbuster at the end of the year with fans' first glimpse of The Suicide Squad scheduled at the end of this month via the DC FanDome event. It makes sense that at this point, there are no changes made yet for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's schedule considering that it's still quite a while before the filmmaker can focus on it. That doesn't mean, however, that it's no longer susceptible to any change. Everything still depends on how the health crisis shakes out in the next few months.

In any case, with Gunn long finished with the movie's script, it's safe to assume that he and Marvel Studios can dive right into working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The whole cast is pretty much intact from the first two films that they know each other quite well, which makes working together so much easier. It's safe to say that Marvel Studios will remain mum about the threequel for now. Fans can expect significant updates, including the release date, by the time production is underway.
