Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld believes Josh Brolin's Cable should have his own movie. The post-credits scene of 2016's Deadpool teased the future introduction of the time-traveling mutant, and fans were thrilled when Brolin was officially cast in the role. He appeared in Deadpool 2 alongside Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson, and at the time, the plan seemed to be for Cable to appear in future films, Deadpool or otherwise. However, the Disney-Fox merger threw those plans into disarray, and now the future of Brolin's Cable remains unclear.

The biggest complication for Deadpool and Cable is that the merger will allow the X-Men to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This could grant the same for Deadpool and Cable, but the concern now is whether Deadpool's R-rated antics will fit in with the family-friendly MCU. For his part, Reynolds is optimistic about Deadpool's future under the Marvel Studios banner, and even confirmed in December that Deadpool 3 is in development. However, Liefeld has been far more cynical about the process, even going so far as to say he doesn't think Marvel is actually working on Deadpool 3.

In a new interview with Collider, Liefeld opened up about what he would like to see for Cable in the future. "Cable should have his own movie series," Liefeld said. He even stated Cable can have a standalone movie without Deadpool, pointing out that he "can exist independent of Deadpool in a heartbeat. He has for years. If Deadpool’s been in like 330 comics, Cable’s been in about 520." Liefeld also mentioned that Brolin had been looking forward to playing Cable in future films, whether it was an X-Force movie or something completely different.

It's very clear Brolin still wishes to be Cable somehow. In July of last year, Brolin revealed he actually called Marvel Studios to ask about what they're doing with Cable. At the time, Brolin said "they're figuring it out," but so far there have been no further updates. In addition to playing Cable, Brolin recently had a pivotal role in the MCU as the Mad Titan Thanos, who essentially served as the overarching villain of the entire Infinity Saga.

It seems like Marvel needs to figure out what to do with Deadpool before crafting a path forward for Cable. Fans can likely rest assured, though, that Brolin's tenure as Thanos won't affect his chances of being Cable again, seeing as the two look very, very different. Brolin proved he makes a good Cable in Deadpool 2, and there's a lot more ground that could be covered with him. But while a Cable solo movie might be what Liefeld and Brolin want, if it doesn't fit into Marvel's grand plan, it might not happen. Perhaps when more news arrives about Deadpool 3, fans will get an update about Cable as well.
