A24 have released the first trailer for their upcoming new drama C'mon C'mon. Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Mike Mills (Beginners and 20th Century Women), the black and white film follows Joaquin Phoenix's radio journalist Johnny who is left to take care of his nephew Jesse (Woody Norman) on behalf of his sister, Viv (Gaby Hoffmann). The film will see the pair form an unexpectedly close bond as they undertake a cross country road trip.

Mills is known for his romantic-comedies that simultaneously carry deal of emotional weight. Alongside his filmmaking, which includes producing music videos for the likes of Yoko Ono and Air, Mills is an accomplished photographer and artist and his artistic eye frequently translates into his films. While C'mon C'mon marks the director's first true drama, his past comedy experience will undoubtedly allow him to bring a great deal of brevity to the film that will balance nicely with the emotional heft of the subject matter.

Set to Claude Debussy's iconic "Claire de Lue," the trailer for C'mon C'mon showcases Jesse's relationship with both his mother and his uncle, as well as them bonding at various points on their trip. All the while, Phoenix narrates a story to his nephew, the sort given to children to help them explain death. You can check out the full trailer below:

While no date is currently given for the release of C'mon C'mon, the film has already been shown at the Telluride Film Festival and is expected to also be showcased at New York Film Festival next month, before receiving a widespread release later in the year. Initial reviews have been overwhelmingly positive with some even tipping Phoenix for another best actor Oscar, after walking with the award for 2019's Joker. Mills has received equal praise for his screenplay, with critics describing it as one of his best, as has newcomer Norman for his portrayal of Jesse.

A24 are a studio known for their indie darlings like Lady Bird and The Farewell, as well as their litany of incredible horror films such as Hereditary, however it's generally understood that their films aren't necessarily for everyone. That said, it doesn't make them any less praise-worthy as they often feature some truly astounding performances and works of cinematic genius. If what little the trailer offers is anything to go by, as well as the early rumblings from critics, then C'mon C'mon may prove to be one of their best features yet thanks to Mills' writing and the performances of Phoenix and Norman.
