After a storied 70-year career, Indiana Jones 5 may be John Williams' final movie score. While plot details have yet to be revealed for the movie, it's expected to be Harrison Ford's final performance as the eponymous archaeologist and adventurer after leading the franchise for the past 40 years. Alongside Ford, the ensemble cast for Indiana Jones 5 includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Toby Jones and Antonio Banderas, all cast in undisclosed roles.

Development on Indiana Jones 5 has been a rocky road as original director Steven Spielberg and writer George Lucas struggled to determine a new story for the film, with the latter passing off the project to Kathleen Kennedy upon her promotion to Lucasfilm president. After initially focusing their attention on the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Lucasfilm got back to work on Indiana Jones 5 with a number of writers coming and going, including Jurassic Park's David Koepp and Solo: A Star Wars Story's Jonathan Kasdan, until James Mangold was brought on to direct and co-write with his Ford v. Ferrari duo Jez and John-Henry Butterworth. Filming on Indiana Jones 5 ran from June 2021 to this past February and the film is set to hit theaters in 2023.

In a recent interview with Associated Press, composer John Williams opened up about his potential career future. Williams confirmed his ongoing work on Indiana Jones 5 and revealed it may be his final movie score, noting the parallel with Harrison Ford making his final appearance as the iconic adventurer with the upcoming sequel. See what Williams said below:

"At the moment I'm working on 'Indiana Jones 5,' which Harrison Ford — who's quite a bit younger than I am — I think has announced will be his last film. So, I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also. I don't want to be seen as categorically eliminating any activity. [Laughs] I can't play tennis, but I like to be able to believe that maybe one day I will."

Though no confirmation has been made about what the future of the Indiana Jones franchise may or may not hold, Kathleen Kennedy did recently indicate it could be the final movie as they wouldn't make another movie without Harrison Ford. Kennedy notably compared this mindset to the failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story, which was met with a divisive response from fans of both franchises as some argued legacy characters should be recast to keep the franchises alive while others agreed the sequel could end the series on a positive note. Ford hasn't spoken out about his thoughts on future Indiana Jones movies, with many of his co-stars on Indiana Jones 5 praising his continued dedication to the physicality of the character making the new film.

Williams' hint that Indiana Jones 5 may be his final movie score is sure to come as a disappointing thought for many fans of the five-time Oscar winner. With that said, many are sure to be open to his possible retirement given his iconic career having already included the Indiana Jones and Star Wars franchises as well as the first two Jurassic Park movies and the first three Harry Potter films. Audiences can look forward to hearing Williams' iconic sounds when Indiana Jones 5 hits theaters on June 30, 2023.
