The Batman might feature Colin Farrell in prosthetics when playing the Penguin. Farrell joined the cast of Matt Reeves' highly-anticipated DC film back in November, and while reports said he would be playing Oswald Cobblepot, AKA the Penguin, Reeves didn't officially confirm it until January. Much like the rest of the film, the Penguin's role in The Batman has been kept a secret, though set photos revealed Farrell's hairstyle and mustache. Farrell's joined by Robert Pattinson (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman), Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth), Paul Dano (the Riddler), Jeffrey Wright (Jim Gordon), Peter Sarsgaard (D.A. Gil Colson), and John Turturro (Carmine Falcone).
Expectations are high for The Batman, though it won't be arriving in theaters as early as expected. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Batman has been pushed from June 2021 to October 21, 2021. The film's production had been shut down back in March because of the pandemic and has yet to resume. At the time of the shutdown, Reeves said they had only completed about a quarter of production, meaning there's still quite a ways to go. To give Reeves more time to finish The Batman, Warner Bros. opted to push it back. However, it sounds like the move might have been beneficial in more than one way, as co-screenwriter Mattson Tomlin suggested it was fitting to have The Batman arrive in October.
Production might be shut down, but some teases are still making their way onto the internet. The latest bit of info comes from someone who isn't associated with the film at all: Rob McClure, who is gearing up to star in Mrs. Doubtfire on Broadway (once it reopens, of course). In a video shared to Reddit by PeteysParker, McClure talks about going in to get his prosthetics for Mrs. Doubtfire and seeing how "they were building the Penguin prosthetics for Colin Farrell in the new Batman movie."
For reference, Danny DeVito wore prosthetics when playing the Penguin in Tim Burton's Batman Returns, which Reeves previously mentioned as a film he admires. Considering the Penguin's very distinctive nose, it makes sense that Farrell would end up donning prosthetics as well. However, the initial set photos of him did not show said prosthetics, so they'll still remain a surprise for fans.
Audiences are quite eager for Reeves' version of the Caped Crusader, especially since he's previously discussed not wanting to make a standard Batman movie. Reeves has promised fans a more grounded take on the character that delves into his detective side and explores his role as a billionaire in today's context. So far, everything regarding The Batman seems very promising. Here's hoping Reeves and his team can safely get back to work soon so fans can see it come to life.
