Knives Out 2 Release Date Officially Revealed

After a three-year wait, Netflix has finally revealed the Knives Out 2 release date. The film, entitled Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, was originally put into development at Lionsgate, the studio behind the original Knives Out, after the film became a critical and commercial smash upon its 2019 release. Writer/director Rian Johnson and T-Street producing partner Ram Bergman would take to auctioning off the rights for a sequel, with Netflix acquiring the rights to two sequels in a major $469 million deal, with Johnson confirmed to write and direct both and Daniel Craig attached to return for both as well.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will center on Craig's Benoit Blanc as he ventures to Greece for a Mediterranean vacation, only to find himself wrapped up in a new mystery. The former James Bond actor will be joined by a large roster of new stars, including Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Ethan Hawke and the potential return of previous star Noah Segan. With filming having wrapped on Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in September, audiences won't have to wait much longer for Blanc's thrilling return.

Ahead of the film's Toronto International Film Festival premiere, Netflix has announced the Knives Out 2 release date. The sequel, entitled Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is coming to the streaming platform on December 23. This puts the film at just over three years after the first film hit theaters.

In addition to its streaming date, Netflix has confirmed that Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is going to be hitting select theaters, the date of which will be announced later. Given the streamer's theatrical releases are generally very selective, it will be interesting to see how the Knives Out sequel fares at the box office in comparison to its predecessor, which grossed over $311 million against its $40 million production budget. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was produced on the same budget and with anticipation high for its arrival, it seems likely that it will have a modest showing at the box office.

With that said, given most Netflix films that hit theaters come out about two weeks prior to their streaming premieres, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will have stiff competition at the box office in December, having to face off against Avatar: The Way of Water, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, all of which are expected to be fighting one another for dominance. However, given Netflix is more focused on how their projects perform with their viewership numbers over theatrical, and having acquired the rights to the Knives Out franchise with a commitment to a third film, those eager to see it continue don't have to worry about how a low box office performance will affect its future. Only time will tell how the film fares when Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery arrives on December 23.

The original was a fun and enjoyable movie. Too bad Ana de Armas is not starring as well. Had great chemistry with Daniel Craig and was one of my favorite characters. Gonna be a different story so it wouldn't really makes sense so I get it. Probably I am kind of biased since I like her but anyway lol

Last couple of movies Netflix released were pretty average at best with an unnecessary bloated budget. Hope they don't somehow mess things up here. Otherwise it looks promising.
