Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Actor Chris Evans praises Hayley Atwell for her performance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Evans has long been associated with Marvel, giving life to one of its most recognizable characters: Captain America. His Steve Rogers first appeared in 2011 and has since been featured in 11 movies (including post-credit scenes). Evans’ time as Captain America finally came to an end in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame when he passed on his iconic shield to Sam Wilson aka Falcon (Anthony Mackie).
The Captain American title and storyline have been explored with several different characters in the comics, with familiar faces like Clint Barton and Bucky Barnes each taking up the shield at some point. Also included in this list are Sam Wilson and Peggy Carter. Peggy Carter was introduced on-screen as Captain Carter in the first episode of Marvel’s What If…? The episode sees Peggy Carter become the world's first super soldier in place of Steve Rogers after he is badly injured. Following this, Atwell appeared in the MCU for Captain Carter’s live-action debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
During an interview with MTV News, Evans was asked his opinion on Atwell’s Captain Carter. Evans admits that he hasn’t seen Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but with his busy schedule while working on Pixar’s Lightyear it’s easy to understand why. Although Evans hasn’t yet seen her performance, the actor had nothing but praise for Atwell. Read his quote below:
I haven’t seen [Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness] yet, but I heard it. I mean she’s perfect for it. … She’s truly just one of the best actresses I’ve ever worked with and just one of the loveliest humans. So, I couldn’t be happier for her.
Evans and Atwell worked together previously on Captain America: The First Avenger, where they were both introduced into the MCU. Since then, Atwell has had consistent Marvel appearances and even featured in her own spin-off series. Agent Carter ran for two seasons before unfortunately being canceled.
With her re-introduction as Captain Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there have been whispers that Atwell may return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for another live-action performance. The rumors suggest that Peggy would be centered in another MCU spin-off show starring Captain Carter. It seems unlikely that it would be 838’s Captain Carter, given her brutal death during Wanda’s encounter with the Illuminati, but the multiverse opens the door to explore a plethora of Captain Carters. Regardless of if or when Atwell’s Captain Carter is to show up again in the MCU, it’s clear that she has the support of her Captain America co-star.
