Wonder Woman star Danny Huston has joined the cast of Rupert Sanders' adaptation of The Crow graphic novel alongside Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs. The upcoming film is a remake of the 1994 cult classic film that starred Brandon Lee. Sanders' adaptation of The Crow entered production after a complicated development history.
Originally a comic book series written by James O'Barr in 1989, The Crow is a dark tale of loss, grief, and vengeance, as Lee's murdered musician Erik Draven rose from the grave to avenge his and his fiance's deaths as a superpowered individual. Despite the 1994 film being struck by tragedy when Lee was killed in a horrific accident during production, the actor's performance, tone, and production design saw the film garner positive acclaim that continues to resonate to this day. And following multiple sequels and attempts at rebooting the franchise, IT star Skarsgård was cast as Draven in a reboot helmed by Snow White and the Huntsman and Ghost in the Shell director Sanders. With filming underway across Europe, a new actor has joined the growing cast of The Crow remake.
As part of an official press release, Huston was confirmed to be cast in an undisclosed role in the upcoming reboot of The Crow. Huston previously starred in Wonder Woman as the German Army general Erich Ludendorff, as well as the younger William Stryker in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and vampire leader Marlow in 30 Days of Night. Huston has also had roles in television series such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Succession, Yellowstone, and multiple seasons of American Horror Story.
News of Huston's casting alongside the previously announced Skarsgård and FKA Twigs is sure to be welcomed by eager fans of The Crow. While test footage of a Jason Mamoa-led Crow remake exists, the 2018 attempt at remaking the cult classic was ultimately canceled when the actor and director Corin Hardy left the production, citing creative differences with the film's rights holder. Mamoa's failed attempt to remake the cult classic follows numerous other false starts across multiple studios dating back to 2008, with actors such as Bradley Cooper, Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans, Jack O'Connell, and even Skarsgård's older brother Alexander being considered to portray Draven. With a history of troubled productions, fans of The Crow are sure to be relieved to see that the current Sanders-helmed film's production is progressing with no complications.
The Crow is a renowned cult feature that continues to set itself apart from any other comic book adaptation since, with its' dark story and gothic aesthetic helping it stand alone amongst more typical superhero fare. And as filming on The Crow remake continues across the summer, anticipation is sure to grow amongst fans hoping to see a re-invention of Eric Draven's quest for vengeance. While Huston's role is currently unknown, the actor's previous performances across film and television have earned him a great deal of acclaim, making him a promising addition to the cast.
