Netflix has released the first trailer for the upcoming black comedy film White Noise. Based on Don DeLillo’s 1985 novel by the same name, the story focuses on an American family whose lives and values are tested by a so-called Airborne Toxic Event. Starring Adam Driver as professor of Hitler studies Jack Gladney and Oscar-nominee Greta Gerwig as his wife Babette Gladney, the pair are joined by co-stars Raffey Cassidy, Don Cheadle, Jodie Turner-Smith, Alessandro Nivola, Andre Benjamin and Lars Eidinger.
In the first trailer for White Noise released by Netflix, the Gladney family’s colorful 80s lifestyles are thrown into disarray. Trapped in a traffic jam while the children examine the families in adjacent cars, Jack questions why it matters what other people are doing. “I want to know how scared I should be,” one of the children replies in a line that seems to reflect the current importance of social media. As a mysterious but apocalyptic event unfurls around them, the family must learn to adapt and recognize what matters. “May the days be aimless. Let the seasons drift. Do not advance the action according to a plan,” says Jack as a gun is cocked in the background. Check out the trailer below:
Helmed by Noah Baumbach, the picture marks his third film project with Driver, having previously worked together on Marriage Story and The Meyorwitz Stories. The film also serves as the filmmaker’s fourth collaboration with Gerwig, with whom he is currently working on the upcoming Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie. In addition to writing and directing, Baumbach also serves as a producer on his latest project with David Heyman and Uri Singer. White Noise is scheduled to premiere at the 79th Venice Film Festival on August 31, with plans to debut in select theatres and on Netflix later this year.
