HDR Debate
I've got a pretty significant collection of movies in HDR, mostly from boutique labels like Vinegar Syndrome, Criterion, Scream/Shout Factory etc. I also have an LG Oled. And... I think I hate HDR. Movies that I know well look very weird to me on HDR. The question that I can't get a straight answer to is... are movies in HDR closer to the look and feel of a pristine 35mm film print, or do they significantly mess with how a film was intended to look to be more "pleasing" to the viewer - changing contrast, brightness, etc. Recently read that Roger Deakins, the cinematographer of No Country For Old Men, hates HDR as do a few other big names in film, but I can't really get a straight answer as to why. So, at the risk of starting a flame war, thought I'd post this here to open up a discussion.
