There is no doubt that the film critic website Rotten Tomatoes can be divisive at times, but at the very least, they offer users a huge sampling of reviews on any given movie, based on an aggregate score of approved critics and fan reviewers. So today we'll take a look at a few of the best sci-fi films from the last decade, as decided on by the adjusted Tomatometer rankings of Rotten Tomatoes.

It's important to note that while in most cases superhero films are considered science fiction, we will be ignoring them for the purposes of this list, as we will be taking a look at those films separately in our ongoing countdown of the best and worst films and TV series we saw over the last decade. It's also important to note that in some cases the adjusted score (which accounts for the audience reviews as well as critics) may place the film higher than the Tomatometer rankings.

10. HER (94%)

Joaquin Phoenix had quite a huge decade, with his most recent role in Joker obviously taking center stage. However, Phoenix previously starred in the off-beat science-fiction romance Her, which told the story of a man who fell in love with the AI on his computer as he dealt with the loss of his former relationship.

Her was written and directed by Spike Jonze and has an adjusted score of 104.402%, which keeps it low on our list despite a higher Tomatometer score than some of the other entries. Her was an enjoyable take on modern human relationships and another great performance from Phoenix, alongside Scarlett Johanssen as Samantha, his virtual assistant.

9. SNOWPIERCER (95%)

2013's Snowpiercer was South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho's adaptation of French comic creator Jacques Lob's graphic novel Le Transperceneige and was jampacked with amazing actors like Chris Evans, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, and more.

The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic future ice age aboard an advanced train segregated by class that is speeding through the frozen wasteland of the world as a revolt breaks out. The film has an adjusted score of 104.383% and will keep you on the edge of your seats well into the credits!

8. THE MARTIAN (91%)

Ridley Scott's 2015 adaptation of Andy Weir's novel of the same name starred Matt Damon as a stranded astronaut left behind on the surface of Mars and forced to use science, training, luck and a positive attitude to survive. Oh, and lots and lots of potatoes.

The Martian sits at an adjusted score of 105.113%, and featured other names like Jeff Daniels, Jessica Chastain, Sebastian Stan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and was nominated for a number of Academy Awards. Scott's exploration of man's ingenuity and determination while stranded away from home taps into our fear of exploration, but still manages to capture the excitement.

7. BLADE RUNNER 2049 (87%)

Blade Runner 2049 is Denis Villeneuve's sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 classic that stars Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Jared Leto, Dave Bautista, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, and sees the return of Harrison Ford and Edward James Olmos.

The film has an adjusted score of 105.464% but a relatively low Tomatometer from both the critics and audience, so its presence on the list is interesting but still unsurprising. Blade Runner 2049 managed to successfully continue the story of the original film while also presenting a beautiful look into this often ugly future world.

6. WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (94%)

Matt Reeves directed the follow-up to Rise of the Planet of the Apes and his earlier sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which rebooted the classic franchise by telling the story from the beginning to see how humanity lost the top spot in Earth's animal kingdom.

War for the Planet of the Apes has an adjusted score of 108.709% and holds the highest Tomatometer score of all three films. WftPofA features an impressive cast that includes Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, and Andy Serkis as he reprises the role of Ceaser in this action-packed finale to the original reboot trilogy.

5. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS (93%)

J.J. Abrams launched the final trilogy of the Skywalker Saga with Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which was set years after the Emperor fell in The Return of the Jedi. Abrams blended a few returning characters like Harrison Ford's Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Carrie Fisher's General Organa along with new stars like Daisy Ridley/Rey and John Boyega/Finn.

The Force Awakens reignited the Star Wars franchise after Lucasfilm's sale to Disney despite moving the story forward without using the fan-favorite Expanded Universe mytho0logy. With an adjusted score of 109.535%, The Force Awakens sits just below its own sequel, which we'll talk about shortly.

4. GRAVITY (96%)

Sandra Bullock gave a fantastic performance in 2013's Gravity, which won Alfonso Cuarón the Academy Award for Best Director in 2013. Bullock starred as an astronaut who is stranded in Earth's orbit after the destruction of the International Space Station.

Gravity holds the second-highest Tomatometer score on our list, though the adjusted score of 109.546% drops it a few places back, though it doesn't detract at all from the film's "best of" status. The film will keep your heart pounding in waves as the action hits hard in this fantastic sci-fi survival film.

3. ARRIVAL (94%)

The second entry from director Denis Villeneuve on our list is his 2016 film Arrival, which starred Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whittaker, and gave viewers an entirely unique take on the alien invasion premise, and without giving too much away, turns everything upside down and will keep viewers thinking as the credits roll.

With an adjusted score of 110.444%, Arrival falls slightly behind our next entry despite its higher Tomatometer ranking. Arrival is a beautiful yet haunting film that deserves its place on any best-of list and helped propel Villeneuve further into the genre he clearly understands so well.

2. STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (91%)

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is arguably one of the most divisive Star Wars films ever released, and continues to be a hot topic for discussion among fans, which is sure to make some question its high placement on this list.

Rian Johnson's eighth chapter of the Skywalker Saga has both a high Tomatometer of 91% and an adjusted score of 110.792%, meaning the majority of both critics and fans on RT loved The Last Jedi which may seem to sit counter to some of the arguments we see expressed online.

1. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (97%)

Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron starred in the 2015 sequel Mad Max: Fury Road, which saw Tom Hardy take on the role of "Mad" Max Rockatansky first made famous by Mel Gibson in the original trilogy. The film's visuals are matched by equally impressive performances from Hardy and Theron, whose character Furiosa has developed a cult following over the years.

George Miller's fourth Mad Max film has both the highest Tomatometer score at 97% as well as the highest adjusted score of 113.117% because the math says so. Fury Road was not only a fantastic successor to the Mad Max franchise but also a truly beautiful piece of science fiction, especially when watching the "Black and Chrome" edition.
