Review
Introduction
BakaBT (Japanese term for a fool) is now a private BitTorrent tracker, focused on East Asian (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) content. BakaBT was closed on April the 12th in 2017 and it is now one of the largest anime-dedicated private trackers around.
Starting around 2004, originally known as Boxtorrents, its staff founded BakaBT in 2009 after discovering that the founder Box was profiting off of website donations. In May 2010 BakaBT was a target of a large DDoS attack. It has been described as a semi-private tracker website befor it changed to a private tracker.
Community
With 113,885 registered users BakaBT is one of the largest anime trackers to find. BakaBT is tracking 18,153 Torrents, and 0 Torrents are unseeded, there are many active members always searching for the best quality material to be able to archive animes in the best possible quality over many years and maybe many decades in the future. BakaBT has a very long 'Blacklist' for torrents that aren't allowed, but the entries expire over time.
The members are active in the Forums, so they are for testing source materiel for creating the best encodes. You can find a huge amount of tracker banners created by the BBT members, 210 banners are curently used on BakaBT, they also have banner contests each yeat for holiday seasons.
What makes BakaBT different?
There are many anime torrent sites but BakaBT is unique in the quality of content. The goal is to provide torrents only for completed anime or anime-related material and only the best versions. Public submissions are not accepted, only Power Users and Power Uploaders may do so and are able to make an upload offer.
All submissions are thoroughly checked before they are added to the ever-growing list of series; ever-growing as even old torrents are still seeded. The mantra in short: quality over quantity, and ease-of-use.
BakaBT exists because of its users; old content is still available because of the many dedicated seeders who provide the members with good download speeds, so returning the favour is a must.
Sign ups are currently closed, so if you are currently without an account or your account has been pruned, you will be unable to use BakaBT from now on.
There will be a system set in its place, either invite or applications or something similar a bit down the line.
Categories
There are not as much categories as it can be found on other (anime) trackers, but it gives a good overview and its easy to imagine which categorie will fit for the content you are looking for, you can choose from the following categories:
- Anime Series
- Manga
- Artbook
- OVA
- Anime Movie
- Music Video
- Soundtrack
- Live Action
- Light Novel
If these categories aren't enough, more options are available by selecting the Searchcloud tags containing the most popular anime series or other common tags.
Freeleech [F]
What is Freeleech?
[F] symbol is used to indicate that a torrent is subject to Freeleech.
Torrents with specific type of content (1080p torrents, Artbooks, Music Videos, and torrents smaller than 100 MB) are subject to Freeleech, this is to promote their distribution.
Important: Warned members can not benefit from Freeleech, as they are not allowed to leech.
Note: This behavior is controlled by the BakaBT tracker, this means as long as the torrent is flagged with [F], you can benefit from this feature during leeching even if you have downloaded the torrent file before it is flagged.
How often does global freeleech happen?
Almost never. Don't ask when it will be happening because you will be ignored.
Bonus Torrents
What are bonus torrents?
Bonus torrents are torrents with few seeders or few leechers, the idea of the bonus system is to keep older torrents alive. Bonus torrents are marked with bonus torrent icon. When you seed a bonus torrent (and have 100% complete file) you will earn 1 bonus point per hour per bonus torrent. You cannot earn more than 10 bonus points per hour even if you are seeding more than 10 bonus torrents at a time.
Bonus points can be exchanged for upload credit on the bonus page (this means you can add an amount onto your 'uploaded' stat on your user page).
Bonus status depends on the number of seeders as well as the seeder-to-leecher ratio, and a few other factors. And since the number of seeders and leechers on a torrent can change, a torrent can gain or lose bonus status as well.
Bonus status is checked and updated every hour.
Bonus Points
You can exchange bonus points for upload, while you can receive max. 10 bonus points per hour.
Note: you get a higher 'discount' if you exchange more bonus points.
Option Points required Add 1 GB upload to my account (3.41 MB per bonus point) 300 bonus points Add 2 GB upload to my account (4.10 MB per bonus point) 500 bonus points Add 5 GB upload to my account (5.12 MB per bonus point) 1000 bonus points Add 10 GB upload to my account (6.40 MB per bonus point) 1600 bonus points
User Classes
What are the different user classes?
Class Description User Normal user, can choose to view hentai, can adopt torrents, can register in our forum. Cannot make torrent offers. Power User Higher user, can view peer lists and report bad torrents or comments. Can make torrent offers. Has access to RSS feed. Maximum 5 slots available to a power user at any given moment in time. Uploader Deprecated and merged with the Power User class. Power Uploader These people can upload directly to the torrent pool without requiring moderator approval. These people are appointed by staff if deemed a trustworthy member of the BakaBT community. Don't ask about becoming one. Moderator/Admins Appointed by Admins. Don't ask about becoming one.
How to become a Power User?
Both seed and leech at least 25GB and have a ratio equal to or greater than 0.5 to maintain it. User status upgrades every day.
Maintaining Ratio
With a large number of freeleech [F] torrents for certain categories, you will find that it is pretty easy to maintain your ratio, getting on some bous torrents will help you only slightly, the amount of upload credits isn't that much unless you have a very low upload connection. but over time it still makes sense to have some BonusTorrents running, but these can change, probably you will need to stick to some less wanted torrents.
Even if it takes time till the torrents are approved, you will see enough uploads every day to find a suitable torrent to get more upload traffic on the 1080p torrents and the other categories that are included.
Account Pruning and Deletion
After 11 months of disuse accounts will be pruned (i.e. not logging into the tracker account). Accounts with 0 download and 0 upload are pruned earlier.
Donator accounts (people who've donated to BakaBT and received a donator status) have the option of disabling inactivity pruning, and safeguarding their account for as long as they hoose. The option is disabled by default, and can be found in the settings page.
Torrent Offer & Adoption System
Who can make offers?
Only Power Users can make new torrent offers, which will be granted or rejected by staff. Torrents offered by staff members and Power Uploaders are added to the torrent pool directly without going through the approval procedure. Non-Power Users can not make offers.
As a Power User you can offer a maximum of 5 torrents. When that limit has been reached you'll have to wait for staff to inspect one of your pending offers.
Why should I adopt a torrent?
You adopt because the (faulty) description of a torrent does not sit right with you, and you have the irresistible urge to fix it, put it right and provide accurate information for future users of BakaBT who will chance upon said torrent.
Note: The adopter effectively becomes the new owner of the torrent. As such, he/she is expected to carry out the usual duties of the torrent owner. They'll be responsible for re-seeding the torrent if it dies (so adopters must have the torrent files), keep descriptions up to date, and make torrent swaps where necessary. Torrent adopting is not stamp-collecting.
Design/Interface
BakaBT looks really nice, not just the overall desing, uploaded torrents are presented in a really enjoyable way, with a lot of artwork and screenshots of the content, anime fans will probably enjoy searching throught the different torrents. The 210 banners that are made by the community members are giving BakaBT an interesting look.
While searching through the BakaBT website, you will notice there are also some slightly random sections to find, like BakaSHOTS, the Forum, the Wiki Page, a Store and while searching through these parts, you will be directed to other sections over and over again, so it can be the case that you will feel a little bit lost. Stillt he interface fells accessable.
BakaBT Wiki
The Wiki Page for BakaBT is accessable for public views, you will find a huge library of BakaBT infos around just everything you might want to know. You can find entries for all kind of questions and informations about BakaBT and everything that is related.
