So long .SE, The Pirate Bay loses domain name court battle in Sweden

AFTER A LONG BATTLE, THE PIRATE BAY HAS TO SAY BYE TO ITS .SE DOMAIN!

The Pirate Bay is no more. At least only in Sweden after the website suffered one of the first major blows in the country where a Swedish Court has ruled that the two domain servers, ThePirateBay.se and PirateBay.se will be taken from the company. Pirate Bay has fought many legal battles over the years from its inception back in 2003.

The website is one of the world’s most popular torrent, and after the ruling by the Swedish Court will see two of its domains handed over to the state instead. The Pirate Bay websites are most notorious for allowing file sharing of downloaded copyright material and encouraging pirating of media files and the programs. Users can do all this for nothing, meaning it’s entirely free.

The firm has faced countless legal battles over its domains and has seen the closure of some of them, but they always open new ones almost every time. But this time around, the .SE domain that the Swedish Court has taken hold of is the 225th most visited website according to the universal Alexa rankings and is one of the principal domains of Pirate Bay.

The Svea Court Appeals statement says that the confiscation of the two domains is viable because the two domains were found to be assisting in crime activity under the Copyrights Act.

Therefore, because of these actions, the right of the domains now by default belong to the state.

One of its legal battles back in 2013 was the famous anti-piracy prosecutor, Fredrik Ingblad.
At the time instead of going directly to Pirate Bay and suing them, he decided to go and attacked the company which distributes the .SE domain names. The company responsible for the hosting of such domains is Punkt SE (IIS).

In the complaint that the company received were files which said that the Pirate Bay websites were all piracy illegal torrent sites and everything connected with the domains piratebay.se and thepiratebay.se, tools and connections were supposed to be suspended.

Last year a court in Sweden then ruled that the prosecution was in the right and that the two domains were to be taken from Pirate Bay. However, the domain hosting firm Punkt SE decided to appeal the decision.

They won the appeal and was $40,000 in legal compensation.

This led the prosecution to appeal again and thus the decision from today. The Pirate Bay websites will, therefore, be owned by the state. Since both the domains are in the name of the Pirate Bay founder it means the next fight now is going to be against him.
