More Changes Afoot
Mes amis, we're adding some tweaks to the way things work around here. The more paranoid among you will doubtless infer that we're just doing this to fuck with you, but you can rest assured that that's not true for some of the following. Some of these changes are experimental and subject to tweaks as we see how they unfold, so we must ask you to be patient of any idiosyncrasies that manifest themselves in the coming days.
These features will be introduced in the coming hours, so don't freak out if it doesn't appear to be there as you're reading this; it'll be here eventually.
So, what are these changes?
User Details Page
The user details page has been revamped somewhat; at first glance it looks pretty much the same but we assure you, gentle member, that there are differences.
- If a member has made any requests, there's a link to everything they're looking for.
- If they deem you worthy, it's possible to see a list of a member's snatched torrents. Upon editing one's profile one will find an option for 'Downloads visible'; this can be set to 'all', 'just friends' or 'just staff'. If you're on the list, you'll see the link on the userdetails page. If you're not, you won't.
- If any of a member's uploads have been favourited, clicking on the hearts will bring you to a list of those uploads.
New Categories
In our ongoing quest to make the site ever more complicated, we're adding two new categories for torrents.
Trailers
We've got a whole passel o' torrents that are nothing but trailers, and these can often defy categorisation under the current system. From now on, these will be easy to find and to differentiate from regular films.
This category, basically, is for any torrent that lists a bunch of IMDbs but doesn't contain the films listed (ebooks excepted). So if your mixtape description contains the IMDbs of all films included, it should be categorised as a trailer. Yes, I know that technically it isn't.
Tinfoil Hat
This one might be a little more controversial but if you find yourself vehemently disagreeing with our definitions, it's important to remember that we're in charge and you're not, so shut up.
So what's in this category? To start with, anything that's currently classified as a documentary but really isn't. This includes stuff about UFOs, bigfoot, the new world order… you get the point. Also, any of those wacky Christian docus currently infesting the site.
Basically: would this pass muster in a peer-reviewed scientific journal? No? Then to the Tinfoil Hat category it goes. Another simple test: do adherents of this philosophy refer to non-believers as 'sheeple' or 'heathens'? That's a good sign that we're firmly in Tinfoil Hat territory.
Note: ethnographic documentaries on adherents of the above aren't included. Those are legitimate documentaries and should be categorised as such.
If you find yourself taking umbrage that your own pet obsession is entirely legitimate and has no business being lumped in with the nutters, remember this: staff decide; you don't.
Oh, and this is really important: don't take this new category to mean you have carte blanche to upload any nonsense on homeopathy, psychics or whatever counterfactual drivel you're into. Tinfoil Hat uploads will have to be cleared in C&E first.
100GB Upload: Nuked
Yeah, it's gone. If you were saving up the credits, too bad; you're just going to have to do your civic duty and seed like a common pleb. There's still 35GB of free upload available which, when combined with the bonuses available on many torrents, should be more than enough for you to keep your head above water. Remember: these upload purchases are intended to help you out during your first year or so here; they're not a substitute for seeding.
We may introduce a smaller purchase later on, but for the time being it's not being replaced.
Featured Torrent Limits
It hasn't escaped our attention - I'm sure it hasn't escaped yours - that when it comes to the featured torrents, there are a few of our cherished members who are just taking the piss. The featured torrents exist for a number of reasons, but high among them is so that those in need of a ratio boost can avail of the few extra free megabytes afforded them by the featured bonus. There are many seedbox-wielding members, though, who are leaping on them early and making this impossible for most. For this reason, we're placing limits on the size of the ratio boost you can get.
- If your overall ratio is less than 1.5, you can seed three times the size of the torrent before being cut off.
- If your overall ratio is >= 1.5, you can seed twice the size of the torrent.
This still gives you a substantial bonus - effectively a maximum torrent ratio of 6 or 9.
Once you've reached this threshold, the tracker will cut you off and you'll get no more upload credited on that torrent while it's featured.
Obviously, if you seed more than the threshold while you're still leeching, all that will be applied to your account. We'll be keeping a list of anyone who tries to game the system by taking advantage of this and disabling their ability to download featured torrents altogether.
If there are fewer than five seeds on the torrent, no limit will be applied.
Note: This only applies while the torrent is featured. Once a torrent becomes featured, everyone starts the counter at zero, irrespective of how long they've been seeding or how much they've seeded. Once the torrent is no longer featured, all limits are removed and you can seed as much as you like.
Note 2: This is very much an experimental feature; we'll be keeping a close eye on it to see how it develops. Required ratios, multipliers, etc are all subject to change depending on how it goes.
New Tags
We've got a couple of nice new tags for you to play with.
mediainfo
Just enclose a mediainfo dump between [ mediainfo] and [/mediainfo] and a nice table encapsulating the data will be shown. Just be sure to use the entire dump; if you edit it in the wrong way or leave anything out, you'll see a "malformed mediainfo" error.
If you want to test your dump (so to speak), head on over to the mediainfo test page and try it out there.
Note: the nature of codecs and shit is such that you may find some inconsistencies in the information; we've done our best to eliminate these, but if you find one let us know.
For the time being, don't use this on DVDs; just single films. We'll probably introduce one for DVD-Rs later, but for now you'll just have to settle for using it on regular old x264s and the like.
Also, when you upload you'll see a separate box on the Upload page; just paste the mediainfo in here instead of including it in the torrent description and it'll appear as… well, you'll see how it appears.
hide
There've been mutterings in the past about the limitations of the spoiler tag, so we've made a new one that'll accommodate more than a line or two of text. Images and the like can now be encapsulated in [ hide] and [/hide] tags and they'll just appear as a "[Show/Hide]" link unless clicked on… for example:
[Hide/Show]
Tracker, Site Activity
Since the last round of changes we inflicted upon your asses the dead wood has fallen like the Persians before Alexander, as power users could no longer use cigars to have site immortality conferred on their slacking accounts. For this reason it's possible to relax the activity requirements somewhat, but just so you don't think we're getting soft we're going to be hardasses in another area.
Activity Requirements
The inactivity threshold is being increased from 90 days to 180; in other words, you can bugger off for about six months and your account will be safe. Not that we're encouraging you to do that; we'd really miss you if you were gone. As with the previous requirement, we count 'activity' as use of either the site or the tracker; you don't have to be here as long as you're seeding or leeching.
Tracker Use
If you've been a member of our merry band for six months and haven't used the tracker, we're going to assume that you're a spy from SPECTRE or somewhere, and remove your account. We're a movie tracker first and foremost, so if you've no interest in downloading movies you've no business being here.
Browser Search Extensions
Those of you who, for whatever bizarre reason, were examining it regularly may have noticed in recent days that your browser's search bar contains a couple of new options while you're perusing our beloved site; for searching the torrents and the forums. These work in firefox and, as they're an open standard, I imagine other browsers can handle them too. Even IE, you ask? Why the fuck do you care about IE?, I retort. I've no idea, I add.
Other Shit
There've been other tweaks here and there, but for the most part they're sufficiently trivial that I couldn't be arsed listing them here. Some are class-dependent and some aren't. Find them yourself.
