Thanks for the post, It is a nice idea, and that is what I do actually, I have a root control over a VPS and I am using it as a seedbox along with doing some other stuff.
I would like to point out something, you know with power comes great responsibility, and when you have your VPS or server exposed to the internet, many script kiddies, automated scripts etc ... will try to gain access over your machine. I monitor the logs on my machine all the time and I get brute force attacks frequently, people try to access the machine over SSH (putty or other) or if you set a vnc server they might just try a great combination of passwords to access your machine, it happened to me that I had a vnc server running on my machine and it blocked all the connection to the VPS because of the great number of not authorized people trying to connect and the authentication is failing.
So what I would like to say, its true that having a VPS or a server is so much fun and gives you so much power but at the same time one should be always alert about possible attacks trying to hack in the machine.
