Guide to circumventing the country’s High Court ruling ordering IPS to block BitTorrent tracker sites, that list now including The Pirate Bay, Kickass Torrents, H33t, and Fenopy

It was February of last year that the UK’s High Court found that the operators of Swedish BitTorrent tracker site The Pirate Bay ”authorise its users’ infringing acts of copying and communication to the public,” thus paving way the way for the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the British record industry’s trade association, to proceed with their application to have the site blocked “to protect creative industries from further harm.”

“Noone [sic] from TPB was invited to the court case, which would be normal to do in a democracy,” said the Pirate Bay in response. “This is not the first time this happens, it’s been the same in most countries we’re censored in. We have no right to speak since we’re not rich.”

Now ISPs may begin to block the site as ordered, but as usual, and as pointed out by ZeroPaid in the past to fight censorship here in the US, there are a number of technical methods you can use to make the effort useless and access The Pirate Bay regardless.
“Use a VPN service to be anonymous and get an uncensored internet access, you should do this anyhow,” added The Pirate Bay. “Or use TOR, I2P or some other darknet with access to the internets [sic]. Change your DNS settings with OpenDNS. Or use googles DNS servers… we could go on…”
These tips are helpful more than ever now that ISPs have done more of the BPI’s bidding by adding Kickass Torrents, H33t, and Fenopy to the list of blocked sites.
So let’s review some of the methods to bypass the net filters in more detail.

1. VPNs
A VPN is a private network with “virtual” encrypted connections routed through the Internet to remote servers. The data traveling between you and those servers is encrypted, and the IP address that will appear will surfing or downloading content from the Internet will be that of the server and not your own.
We have a list available of the top 5 free VPN services out there, and some not so free that are available for a small monthly fee.
2. TOR
TOR (The Onion Router) is a system intended to enable online anonymity by creating virtual layers of anonymity that have to be peeled back like a real onion in order to find a user’s IP address. The original data are encrypted and re-encrypted multiple times, then sent through successive Tor relays, each one of which decrypts a “layer” of encryption before passing the data on to the next relay and, ultimately, its destination.
We have a setup guide available here or you can skip to the end and download the TOR browser here (just download, install, and run).
It’s available for Mac, Windows, and Linux.
3. MAFIAAFire
MAFIAAFire is a web browser plug-in (Firefox and Chrome) that maintains a list of URLs and their mirror sites so that if or when a domain is blocked or seized the plugin will take you to the new site without you even noticing. Download it here.
4.TorrentProxies
Probably the easiest of all. Simply visit the site TorrentProxies which contains lists of proxies for each of the filtered sites so you can visit them without skipping a beat.
5. Visit by IP Address
Depending on how the ISPs configure the filtering system you should be able to visit the site manually by entering its IP address instead of its domain name (its currently 194.71.107.15).
You can learn more about how to obtain server IP addresses here.
Now there’s still more methods for evading ISP filters and accessing The Pirate Bay, some of which can be found here.
