MOSCOW, March 21 (Itar-Tass) - RIA Novosti. US Senator John McCain criticized US President Donald Trump for congratulating Russian leader Vladimir Putin on winning the last election.

"The American president is not the leader of the free world, congratulating the dictators on winning false elections," the press release posted on the senator's website said.

According to McCain, congratulating Vladimir Putin, Trump "insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in free and fair elections to determine the future of his country."

At the recent presidential election in Russia, the incumbent head of state, Vladimir Putin, won a convincing victory, gaining more than 76% of the vote with voter turnout of about 65%.

Observers from the SCO acknowledged that the elections were organized on the principles of openness and transparency. The CIS observer mission stated that during the elections the CEC of the RF worked transparently and openly, and the elections themselves were free, legitimate and competitive.
