The Pentagon is considering the possibility of building up a military presence in Asia. And plans to transfer there additional units of the Marine Corps.

Thus, the US intends to respond to the growing influence of China. The Pentagon believes that the new defense strategy of the PRC is aimed at undermining the international order.

It is expected that the so-called expeditionary detachments of marines will be sent to East Asia, consisting of about 2.2 thousand people, the newspaper The Wall Street Journal reports.

The edition notes that such detachments are intended primarily for quick reaction and are usually deployed on small landing craft. They are able to conduct sea, land and air combat, carry out rescue and logistic operations and provide support to other troops.

Earlier, the US already used such detachments in Syria and Iraq against the "Islamic state" (a terrorist group, banned in Russia), as well as in Afghanistan. In Asia, the task of the military will be patrolling the territories and conducting joint exercises with the allies.

Now about 50 thousand US military, including 18 thousand marines, are stationed in Japan. Another 30 thousand - in South Korea, and about seven thousand - on the island of Guam in the Pacific Ocean.
