Uber reveals that the data of 57 million users have been hacked
The CEO of Uber revealed on Tuesday that the data of 57 million users across the world, including those of 600 000 drivers have been hacked to the end of 2016.
The names of users and their e-mail addresses and mobile phone numbers have been appropriated, said Dara Khosrowshahi in a press release. The names and driver’s license numbers of drivers Uber has in addition been hacked.
On the basis of external appraisals, the boss says that the history of trips, the card numbers and bank accounts, social security numbers and dates of birth of users would, however, not been hacked.
Mr. Khosrowshahi, who was appointed to the head of Uber in late August, pointed out that he had been informed of “recently” in this incident.
It specifies that two individuals that are not part of the company would be responsible for this hacking.
“The incident has not reached the systems of the business or its infrastructure”, he adds.
According to Bloomberg, Uber would have paid 100 000 dollars to the hackers so that they do not disclose the existence of this incident, any information that has not been confirmed by Uber.
“At the time of the incident, we took immediate measures to secure the data and put an end to the unauthorized access of individuals. We have identified these individuals and received assurances that the data collected would be destroyed,” explained Mr Khosrowshahi.
“We have also put in place security measures to restrict access and strengthen controls on the accounts of our database,” he said.
The CEO stresses that it is questioned on the fact that the information has not been relayed than a year after the fact. It also considers that the company has failed by not immediately informing the victims of this piracy, as well as the authorities.
He added that he took, therefore, several measures to improve procedures, including better data protection for drivers victims of this incident.
“Although we have no evidence of fraud or of fraudulent use related to this incident, we monitor the affected accounts and have strengthened their protection against fraud”, he still detailed.
This hacking is the latest in a long series in the United States.
At the beginning of September, it is the company Equifax, which collects and analyzes personal data of customers applying for a credit, which had revealed an intrusion of mid-may to late July in its databases. The personal information (names, social security numbers, dates of birth, etc.) of more than 145 million customers in the us and others in Canada and Great Britain had then been stolen.
At the beginning of October, the Wall Street Journal revealed that hackers had stolen secret documents of the intelligence services of the us. Piracy would be done through a Microsoft Office software infected. The theft could have occurred between September and November 2014.
