T’S BEEN THIRTEEN years since Johnny Depp first put on some guy-liner, a few fake dreads, and a bandana he stole from Little Steven’s private-label collection in order to create Jack Sparrow, the zero-bucks-giving swashbuckler at the heart of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean films. Since then, the series has earned billions of dollars worldwide, and somehow made Hollywood Boulevard even more unbearable than usual.

Still, you won’t find the 53-year-old actor anywhere in the first teaser for next year’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth film in the franchise (and maybe keeping the star under wraps is a good idea, given the year Depp’s had so far). What you will get is some savage swordplay, a fire-plagued ship, and a new villain in the form of the creepy, crepuscular-looking Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem. “Find Sparrow for me,” Salazar commands a young soldier, “and tell him: Death comes straight for him.” We’ll find out if Jack gets whacked when Dead Men Tell No Tales opens May 2017.
