Where were you, Umesh Yadav?

The India and KKR fast bowler played exactly two IPL games in the last two seasons and none last year. In two overs on the opening night of IPL 2022, however, he offered a reminder of his abilities as a PowerPlay enforcer with the ball. He dismissed reigning Orange Cap winner Ruturaj Gaikwad for a duck and IPL debutant Devon Conway in the next. CSK never recovered from those early jolts and finished with a grossly sub-par 131 on the board. With dew settling, it was a fairly easy chase for KKR, even if it took them 18.3 overs to get there. It was only KKR's second win in 12 trips to the Wankhede Stadium, the last one coming in 2012.

Dhoni finds his death-overs range

Captain no more, MS Dhoni had a task as the team's finisher-in-chief. CSK froze through the middle-phase of their innings, going as many as 48 balls without a boundary. At the end of 17 overs, they'd limped to 84 for 5 before Dhoni turned on his late-overs genius. Andre Russell and Shivam Mavi bore the brunt of his punishment as Dhoni raced to a 38-ball half-century, his first in the tournament since this game on April 21, 2019. But just like that day in Bengaluru, Dhoni's genius wasn't enough to force a CSK win.

Dwayne Bravo (3 for 20) is now tied with Lasith Malinga for most wickets (170) in IPL history
Captaincy jitters for Jadeja?

As captaincy debuts go, Jadeja had one to forget. He lost the toss, ran Ambati Rayudu out, almost ran Shivam Dube out, scored a subdued 28-ball 26*, went wicketless and of course, lost the match.

On today's programme

The second game will take us to Mumbai's third venue, the DY Patil Sports Academy, where we'll get a first look at Mayank Agarwal's Punjab Kings and Faf du Plessis's Royal Challengers Bangalore.
