T-Mobile adds universal support for RCS' next generation of texting to the Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 edge
Until now, Sprint was the only U.S. carrier that had universal support for RCS' next generation text messaging, thanks to Google Jibe. That means that Sprint alone allowed its subscribers to use the latest in texting technology for inter-carrier messaging. While T-Mobile allowed its subscribers to text among each other with the latest technology, a tweet from the carrier's CTO, Neville Ray, says that T-Mobile has started rolling out GSMA Universal Profile 1.0. The update will allow T-Mobile subscribers to participate in group chats of up to 100 people, and allows transfers of files up to 100MB in size via a text.
There is just one huge thing we need to tell you. At this moment, the update is available only for T-Mobile subscribers toting the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. The GSMA Universal Profile 1.0 next-gen texting technology was included in the phones recent update to Android 8.0 Oreo. Ray says that T-Mobile plans on pushing out the update to more devices "over time."
Some on Twitter wanted to know when the Google Pixel handsets might receive the update. Ray responded by tweeting, "We’ve connected with Google and we’ll interconnect our solutions as soon as Google is ready. It’ll happen, but no ETA as of yet." As soon as T-Mobile starts updating other handsets, we will let you know ASAP.
