Latest update: September 27th, 2019. Sprint has expanded its 5G coverage to 4 more cities: New York, LA, Washington DC and Phoenix.

Sprint launched its True 5G Network at the end of May 2019 and because it uses mid-band spectrum as the underlying technology for the network, it has been able to offer the widest 5G coverage of all US carriers at launch.

In contrast, rivals Verizon Wireless and AT&T rely on complicated millimeter-wave tech that delivers incredible speeds, but you get coverage only in very near proximity to a 5G node, something that Sprint harshly, but correctly describes as a "hotspot 5G network".

Sprint meanwhile kicked off its 5G network with a launch in four major US cities: its home market of Kansas City, as well as Atlanta, the Dalls-Fort Worth metropolitan area, and Houston. You don't have blanketed coverage all around these cities, so for example if you are driving you will notice that the network will often switch between 5G and 4G, but at least you don't need – we are exaggerating, but not much – to stand under a certain lamp post to get 5G coverage.

The carrier is also expected to launch in more big cities in the US in the near future and it's already got a few 5G phones on offer: the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and the LG V50 ThinQ 5G.

In terms of speeds, you should expect an average of 203.8 Mbps for 5G, nearly 6X faster than Sprint’s average LTE download speed of 35.2 Mbps.

So where exactly do you get coverage? And how is that changing? We will be keeping a close look on Sprint's 5G expansion in this post and we will be updating it regularly, so make sure to bookmark it.

Atlanta 5G coverage

Atlanta, Georgia is one of the inaugural Sprint 5G markets and you can see how Sprint covers a wide area up north to Brookhaven and all the way to Sandy Springs. Coverage here is spotty and the area is not completely blanketed in 5G.

Sprint' covers approximately 150 square miles and some 565,000 people here at launch.

Chicago

Chicago 5G coverage

Sprint has launched a 5G network in Chicago. Here is what the company's press release reads: "From the historic IL-64 in the north to Stevenson Expressway in the south, and as far as California Avenue in the west to the periphery of Lake Michigan in the east. Sprint 5G covers popular destinations such as Magnificent Mile, River North, Millennium Park, River Front, The Loop, and Grant Park, as well as the neighborhoods of Gold Coast, Old Town, West Loop, Ukrainian Village, Medical Village, University of Illinois at Chicago, South Loop and more."

Dallas-Fort Worth

Dallas 5G Coverage

Sprint has a strong 5G presence in Texas and the Dallas and Fort Worth metropolis are two examples. Sprint's 5G coverage here extends to Irving, and north of Dallas up to Carrolton and Richardson, while the Fort Worth coverage also extends to the Northern suburbs of Melody Hills and Richland Hills.

Sprint chose Dallas to show its 5G network to the media with CTO John Saw announcing that at launch, the 5G network covers 575 square miles and approximately 1.6 million people, a truly impressive achievement that no other carrier could match at the time.

Houston

Houston 5G coverage

Houston, the most populous city in Texas, with more than 2.3 million inhabitants is a great opportunity for Sprint and you can see that all the central areas around downtown and mid-town Houston, as well as Memorial Park and further down south and to the west you have pretty solid coverage. There are some 4G LTE spots, of course, so there is definitely room for improvement, but the area that Sprint covers is quite wide.

At launch, Sprint covers 165 square miles here and approximately 800,000 people.

Kansas City

Kansas City 5G coverage

Kansas City is the place where Sprint's headquarters are located and it is traditionally the place where you get the newest technologies first.

We see that nearly the whole city is blanketed with a 5G network with few 4G LTE spots, so you can a solid 5G connection in most places here.

At launch, Sprint covers 225 square miles and some 625,000 people here.

Los Angeles

You have scattered Sprint coverage in LA and it would be best to check particular areas of the city to know whether you will get access to the 5G network.

New York

Quite a few parts of downtown Manhattan are covered, so if that's where you live you might enjoy the new 5G network. Some areas in Queens and Brooklyn also have coverage, but it would be best to first check for your particular region.

Phoenix

You have quite widespread coverage in the Phoenix area.

Washington DC

Washington DC is also well covered, but since 5G does not travel as far and wide as a traditional 4G network, you might experience areas with spotty coverage too.
